AMERICAN ATHLETES.
VISIT TO HA VERA. ARE ANGEuVIENTS BEING MADE. Preliminary arrangements for the reception and entertainment 'in Haweraiof the American world’s champion athletes. Jackson V. Scholz and Llovd Hahn, were made at a meeting of the committee of the flawera. Amateur Atliletic Club last evening. Committees for the training of the athletes, reception and entertainments were set up and arrangements regarding the ath'etic meeting on the evening of February 3 were made. The prospect ol‘ a visit of the world’s champion athletes is causing a great deal of interest in Taranaki, and as Hawera will he the only town iu the Taranaki-Wanganui district where the champions wi'l be competing, it is anticipated that athletes from all parts of die district will be competing, and followers of sport will be present at the meeting. The interest created by the visit .is increasing as the tour of the champions progresses. Up to the present the rosu:ts of the meetings held in other centres have shown the high standard of amateur athletics in New Zealand, and in view of the strong club in Hawera, the meeting here is expected to produce very good results. The Americans will arrive in Hawera on Monday evening. February 1, by the mail train, and will ’eave on the following Thursday after the meeting. At last evening’s meeting there were present: Messrs L. Hunt (chairman), I>. Straclian, M. H. Kendall, M. R. Tones, L. I. Marter, J. Goodwin, Allen,
■' v. Thomas, R. P’ank, H. A. Morgan and G. H. Weir. T! 10 chairman reported that an improvement in the lighting arrangements bad been effected on the straight. It vas decided, after discussing the advisability of shifting all the lights oil the remainder of the track, to go further into the question of improvement, md a committee consisting of Messrs Grant. Hunt and Marter was given >ower to have alterations effected.
The secretary reported that the committee had apparently misinterpreted the council’s letter dated 11th September 1925, with regard to finances of tour. It was originally thought that this club, alter paying the guarantee, would be entitled to retain nett profits of file meeting at Hawera. A further reading of' the council’s letter iroved that the supposition was wrong, iml that the club would have to pay over all profits and take its chances of receiving a refund' of guarantee and profit from general funds in terms of council’s letter. Special committees in connection with the Visit of the Americans were formed as under: Reception committee, Messrs Kendall, Jones,. Morgan, and Grant. The matter of providing masseurs was letf with Mr Jones. Mr Hunt was given charge of the ground arrangements.
The secretary of the club, Mr G. H. Weir, desires to draw atention to the fact that it will be necessary for a 1! club members to leave their names, together with the events in which they are competing, with h : m by to-morrow evening at nine o’clock.
