The New Zealand swimming championships were commenced in the Napier municipal baths on Saturday night belt)re a very large attendance of spectators, the whole available space being occupied. Competitois in .satisfactory numbers attended lroin all parts of New Zealand. Very keen interest was taken in the swimming, which in practically all events was of a high standard. 'The 100 yards men's championship final provided a great race, in which N. I Tow sett (Wanganui) not only defeated the holder of the record time and the championship (Adamson), but clipped two-fifths of a second oft the record.
In the 75 yards intermediate girls' breast-stroke AI iss J. Whyman (Wanganui) swam a splendid race and equa-l-led tlie record.
The intermediate boys’ 220 yards was won in good style by G. Bridson (Auckland), who covered the distance in three-fifths of a second over the record time.
100 yards men’s championship. New Zealand record time 59sec., by L. K. Jvronfeld (Auckland). Holder of the championship, A, Adamson (Auckland). —N. Dow sett (Wanganui) 1, Adamson (Auckland 2, L. Faii-gray (Auckland) j. Also started: D. P. Lindsay (Oantenbury), W. Sutherland J. Cameron (Wellington), 'lime, 58 3-5 sec., a New Zealand record. The final was easily the most exciting race of the evening. The field of six got away to a perfect .start, and from the first stroke the pace was a cracker. The end ol the first, lap saw the six almost dead in line, .but on the turn Dowsett drew slightly ahead, followed bv Adamson (the holder of the title), with Fairgray lying third. At the home turn there was very little between Dowsett and the Aucklander, and a ding-dong battle commenced, the former maintaning .a slight lead. Fifteen yards from home Dowsett gained a little and finished in a .brilliant record-breaking style barely half a yard in front of Adamson the .same distance between the second and third men. Dow sett's great victory was accorded round upon round of cheering from the delighted public. ](!() yards ladies’ championship. New Zealand record time, Imin, 5 3-ssee., by Miss .EL Stock ley (Auckland). Holder of the championship, Miss E. Stockley (Auckland). —Miss E. Stockley (Auckland) 1, Miss J. Belli Auckland 3. Also stunted : Miss V. Edser (Hawke’s Bay). Time, f inin 7sec. From a splendd startM.iss .Stockley immediately took the lead, and swimming superbly had gained a yard on the completion of the first- lap. In the second lap the champion forged .still further ahead, and on the turn for home was leading Miss Bell by four yards, with two yards between the latter and Miss Page. In the final dash Miss Stockley touched three yards ahead of Miss Bell, who headed Miss Page by a yard. Miss Edser being a- bad last. Both the winner and the second were well under the New Zealand standard time of 09sec.
75 yards intermediate- girls’ breaststroke championship. New Zealand record time, imin 7 4-ssec., by Miss V. Scot ten (Otago). Holder of the championship, Miss V. Scotten (Otago).— Miss J. Whyman (Wanganui) 1, Miss L. Broadhead (Wanganui) 2, Miss E. Anderson (Wanganui) 3. Also started : Miss K. Miller (Otago). Time, Imin. 74-ssec. The four struck the water together and almost immediately Miss Whyman crept ahead, until at- the turn she was leading Miss Broadhead and .Miss Anderson by a yard, Miss Miller being a similar distance behind. The second lap saw Miss Broadhead gain a little, but not enough to trouble the leader, who finished strongly two yards ahead. A- yard separated second and third. 'The time equalised the New Zealand record. .
220 yards intermediate hoys’ championship. Now Zealand record time. 2min 3Asec., by E;. V. Guunold (Auckland). Holder of the championship, 1). P. Lindsay (South Canterbury). —G. Bridson (Auckland) 1. J,. Fitch (Canterbury) 2, W. Cameron (Wellington) 3. Also started . W. Hyland (Wanga/liuli), P. .Matthews (Wa'inganui). Field Ashburton). Time, 2min 38 3-5 sec. The six got away to a splendid start and finished the first lap all together. The second lap saw them separate, however. Bridson -leading Fitch and Cameron, on the turn into the third lap. Cameron here overhauled Fitch and chased the leader, who was going splendidly. On, the fourth lap the order was Bridson. Cameron and Fitch, with, the rest strung out. Spurting a little Fitch again got into second position, and as the turn was made for home Bridson held the lead from him by ten yards, maintaining it till the finish. Oamerou finished well five yards behind Fitch. . Time, 2min 38 3-ssec., three-fifths of a second over the record.
•50 yards junior .girls’ championship. New Zealand record time, 32 3-s,see., by Miss L. Con tits (Auckland). Holder of the championship. Miss 1, .Coutfs (A.uckla nd). —Miss H. llanlon (Auckland) I, Ali.ss S. Brown (Auckland) 2, Miss {>. Harvey (Auckland) 3. Also ■started: Miss J. Malcom.son (Canterbury), Miss A. Sveiuson (Wanganui). Time, 34 4-sseo. The winner led the (/•Id away to a good start and at the 33 l-3yards distance held the lead from Miss Brawn and Miss Harvey. Miss Hanlon finished strongly three' yards ahead of ALi.—s .Brown, with Hiss Harvey well up third and Miss Alai com son fourth. The time was. well below the standard.
100 yards junior boy,s’ championship. .New Zealand record time, lmin 7 4-5 sec-., by s’. MeTigue (Canterbury). by Icier of the championship, W. Cameron (Wellington).—T. Cade (Wanganui) 1, L. Olds (Otago) 2, O. Bose (Hawke’s Bay 3. Also started: J. byon.s (Canterbury) and W. Stockley (Auckland), 'rime, 75 2-ssec. All took things easily in the first lap. Cade turning first a. yard ahead of Olds and Lyons. 'l'iie same order prevailed in the second lap, except that Stockley surrendered fourth place to Bbse. In the final lap Hose pulled further up ami Code led, to win by three yards, a yard separating Olds and Bose, Stockley being a similar distance away fourth, l’lie time was not brilliant.
One Mile Men’s Championship. New Zealand record time, 24min. 39sec., by M. E. Champion (Auckland). Holder of the championship. E. V. Gunn old (Auek'and). A. E. Baird (Auckland) 1. L. Hill (Canterbury; 2, D. Mcfveague (Hawke’s Bay) 3.. Also started: Cunnold (Auckland), L. .Bussell (Hawke’s Bay), C. Eversleigh (Wel’ingt.on), J. Enwright (Auckland), H S. Weston (Taranaki). Time, 25min 19 l-ssee. 'fhe field of eight was sent off with a perfect start, Enwright making the pace for the first three or four laps. Hill, Baird, Cunnold, Enwright and Mc.Keague appeared to be going smoothly unti l . the twelfth lap, when Hill )ed slightly from Baird, with Cunncld a few yards back third and Enwright ten yards stll further behind. The quarter-mile saw five left in the running, still, in the same order, but on the loth lap the number was reduced to four, Enwright “throwing up
the sponge.” Clinging together, Bail'd and Hill entered on the 20th lap, with (Junnokt ten yards away and Mciveague we i over a length behind. Stroke mr stroke the leaders kept together, and on reaching tii e hall-mile Had drawn live yards lurtlier away from the titleholder. After a lap or so had been covered on the third quarter the pace tightened up, and on tile three-quarter mark being passed Cunnokl lelt the pool. Mciveague was swimming dogged v over two lengths behind. AYitn 100 yai*ds to ,*»;o Mill headed the A licklander slightly and the l>ac e began to liven up. On the second turn iiom home Baird drew level and then began to spurt. On the last turn Baird captured the lead and then sprinted, to win in a slashing liuisli by 10 yards. Wafter Lanfer, of Cincinnati. clipped two-fifths of a second off the hundred yards back-stroke, which lie swam in j min osec. Then, without stopping, lie went one hundred metres further in 1.11.1-5, as compared with Weismuller’s 1.12 3-5.
