OPERATIC SOCIETY.

ANNUAL PICNIC. PLEASANT DAY’S OUTING. To Qpunake on Wednesday went about sixty members of the Hawera Operatic Society, there to hold their annual picnic, the most popular event in the history of the society. A number went in the morning and the rest at' midday. All spent a most enjoyable and interesting time, for the weather, save for a shower that lasted a. few minutes only, was ideal for the beach. During the day swimming was largely indulged in, the water being perfect. A sports programme -was also held and a large number of events were closely contested. The winners were : —- Single ladies’ race.—Miss-Campbell 1, Miss Cook 2. (Single men’s race.—Thomas 1, Walsh 2. Married men’s race.—[Barringer 1, H. L. Sipratt 2. Married ladies’ race. —Mrs. Latham I, Mrs. Coleman 2. Boys’ race (under If). —Wool lefts 1, Holmes 2. Girls’ race (under 14). —Miss Goodson 1, Miss Powe 2. Relay! race.—Thomas’ team 1. Three-legged-race.—Miss Hooper and Paterson 1. Miss MeGlashan and Walsh 2. Pig-a-baek.—Thomas 1, Walsh 2. "Wheelbarrow.—Miss MeGlashan and Walsh 1. Miss Cook and Barringer 2. After tbe picnicers returned in the evening they had light supper a,t the Golden Minim and a number of them indulged in dancing. It was altogether a thoroughly enjoyable function.
