A shattering detonation, due- to the explosion of gas -and petrol, aroused residents of the Moabit district of Berlin early this morning. A J'our-storey-house collapsed like a pack of cards, burying the occupants under eight- feet of debris. The whole street- was the scene of wild destruction. A motor car was hurled .some distance away and was smashed to pieces. All the windows in the neighbourhood wore broken and the frames were hanging in the street- fronts. Eire brigades worked feverishly and were threatened every moment by further collapses of loosened mason ary. The explosion was caused by an escape of gas which became ignited. The flames spread to a chandler’s shop where they set fire to a barrel of benzine. The house was inhabited by twenty-five families. Forty'persons so far have been extricated from the minis. Of these five ’ were dead and twenty were seriously injured.—Reuter.
