A DILEMNA
IMPORTATION OF APPLES. THE ARSENIC DANGER. ATTITUDE OF OFFICIALS. T.Y CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION - COPYRIGHT. (Received Jan. 16, 11 a.m.) LONDON. Jan. 15. The National Federation of Fruit Traders spent the whole of yesterday discussing the dilemna resulting from the Health Ministry’s prosecution of retailers for selling arsenically affected apples. The Federation, decided to recommend the sellers to wash their present stocks, but. refused responsibility for similar treatment for shipments arriving from Australia, Canada, America and elsewhere. A committee representing all the Dominions interviewed the Under-Secre-tary for Health this morning and requested a definite statement regarding the Ministry’s policy. The reply practically announced the intention, to rely on the powers of the British port and health authorities, which arc already sufficient to prevent the importation of deleterious food. Therefore it is not. proposed to issue special regulations dealing with apples. The committee arc arranging to investigate arriving' shipments. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
