, SIX OF THEM DUPED. A JAM FACTORY PROPOSITION. (by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 7. The story of how six people, parted with nearly £6OO on the representation of Robert Ruff, aged 45, that he was about to start a factory for the manufacture of home-made delicacies, was told at the Police, Court this morning, when Ruff pleaded guilty to four charges of obtaining money by false pretences. John Reed stated that he borrowed ’ £lO2 from a friend and gave it to Ruff. He got into touch with Ruff through an advertisement. He< said that he was going to commence a. business in Auckland for the manufacture <.!' jams and pickles, and wanted money to purchase the plant. John Henry and Frederick Ryder stated that they paid £240 for a third share each in the business. Herbert Baylv stated that he paid £l4O for a half share. Kenneth Reed paid £SO for half a share, and Mary Sudclv £55 10s for half a. share. She got £l6 hack in small sums. Detective Hammond stated that the accused admitted the offences. He also admitted getting £2OO from two other men. Ruff was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
