After somethin": like fifteen years service, Detective M. Gourlay, now stationed at Wanganui, has resigned his position from the police force' in order to further his interests in a business enterprise. Sneak thieves have been active at Castlecliff beach during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Some bathers who neglected to take precautions and leave their valuables in charge of the caretaker have been relieved of their spare cash (says the Chronicle). The farmhouse of Arthur Blondell, at Waimatu, was destroyed by fire on Saturday morning. The incident was attended by a tragedy, William Henry King, farm labourer, single, aged 28, being burned to death on the premises. King complained of not being well, and when called to milking next morning he answered, hut did not get up. Blondell milked several cows and then went towards the house to see what was the matter with King. He found the house ablaze. The fire was fiercest near King’s room.
