The two Wednesdays when business places were open were remarkably good days, according to remarks made by business men to a Star representative in response to inquiries, in a number of cases the business done during the holiday time had been a record, though, as was stated by several, part of the earlier portion oi the year had not been so good as was hoped. But. said one business man, our experience was that people bought freely and seemed to have good supplies of cash and were inclined to buy goods of a very fair quality.
Everyone apparently was very well satisfied with the volume of trading done, and in most cases it was better than last year.
Motor garages who have the agency for through services reported that a large number of cars passed through during the holidays, showing that people from other places were travelling freely. Dealers in sundries for the use of motorists made reports of a similar nature. The number of through travellers putting into Hawera en route to other places, or staying a day or so, was much in advance of those of previous years. Post office work, especially in savings bank business, was exceptionally heavy. The growth of this department has been remarkable, and the- number of accounts, ancl consequently the amount of business done, has increased by leans and bounds. ‘ Taking nil in all. the season just concluded had lioeii very good indeed, and had more than maintained the optimistic on in ions held by many that the returns would pan out well.
