HIS TURN NOW.
SENSATIONAL A BREST. NOTABLE POLICE FIGURE. LONDON, Dec. 17. Sir Basil Thomson, who until recently was Assistant Commissioner of Police, was arrested on a charge of committing an offence in Hyde Park. A woman named Thelma Delava was also arrested. Both failed to answer their bail at the Marlborough Street Police Court to-day, and the magistrate issued summonses returnable on January 1. The newspapers, describing Sir Basil Thomson as “the anti-spy chief,” who foiled many German secret service operations in wartime, recall that he presided at many stern cross-examina-tions which resulted in the execution of spies. The most dramatic was his interview with Sir Roger Casement, who finally said: “I suppose you are going to shoot me?” Sir Basil replied: “I can’t promise you that.” Sir Basil Thomson, by mistake, attended at Bow Street Police Court to surrender bis bail instead of at Marlborough Street. The magistrate later accepted this explanation, and withdrew a warrant which had been issued for his arrest, substituting a summons.
