Much sympathy will be felt witli Mr. N. 11. Papakaknra, tlie well-known singer, in consequence of the death of his Avife, which, took place at New. P l y mouth -on Wednesday. Tho death of Mrs. RaAviri Karaka at Gisborne the other day removed one of the oldest and most respected rangitiras in the Po\’erty Bay district. She AA r as a daughter of Hetekai Haronga and a grand-daughter of Tamai Hiki To Rangi, tho leading chieftain of the Natives in the district, and father of tlie well-known Hireni Tc Kani. She had two children, of whom Rangiuia, the musician, AA’ho died in England some years ago, Avas one.
Dates have been pencilled in for passages for Sir .Tames and Lady Parr to London, in a steamer leaving New Zealand in April next. Sir James Allen’s term as High Commissioner does not end till a few months later, but, if Sir James Parr is to be the next representative of New Zealand, he would naturally like to be on the spot some time before Sir James Allen leavbs the office in order to make himself conversant with what has been going on. Sir Frank Heath, secretary of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Great Britain, will arrive in Wellington from Sydney on February 2nd. Sir Frank Heath is at present in Australia, and will report to the Federal Government on the question of industrial research and as to how in his opinion science can best assist manufacturers. After a tour of New Zealand extending over six weeks, he will furnish a report on industrial research to the Government, together with any comments he may see fit to make on the report on the same subject already furnished bv Sir Ernest Rutherford.
