SUMMER.
(Written for The Star.)
Oh! welcome the summer’s glad visit at last: Cold winter is lost in the boisterous past; Warm breezes sway gently the gold-wattle tree, Where the scented air beckons the wild honey-bee
The fronds of the willow dip deep in the stream, Where a waterfall splashes its silvery gleam; The heart of the bushland hides beauty untold. Where the delicate kowhai pours exquisite gold.
The music of Nature is filling the air. The song of the bellbird hangs drowsily there; The murmur of water floats up from the glade. Where a streamlet is lost in the untrodden shade.
Oh! welcome the, summer’s glad visit at last: Cold winter is lost in the boisterous past; Warm breezes sway gently the gold-wattle tree. And the spirit of summer is calling to me. —Katherine Quin Whareroa. -
