STRATFORD RACING CLUB.

annual meeting opened. FIRST DAY’S ECENTS. CUP WON BY BRIGHT DAY. Despite the threatening weather conditions prevailing during the morning, the first race of the Stratford Racing Club’s annual meeting, which opened yesterday was witnessed by a large crowd of spectators, drawn from all parts of the province. Besides the local complement, large numbers journeyed to Stratford by the train and car services, while no less than 553 motorcars parked in the enclosure brought passengers who contributed to the total. Though the morning was windy, conditions were not unpleasant, but just prior to the fifth race rain commenced to fall, and continued iutermittentlv during the remainder of the day. Though the fields were not large, speculation was keen, and the totalisator staff, under Mr AY. O’Callaghan, spent a busy day. The sum of £31,321 10s went through the machine, this representing a decrease of £2758 10s on the corresponding day in 1925, when £34,080 was handled. As starter, Mr A. Morse sent the fields away , with a minimum of de'ay. while at the home end the judge, Mr C. H. AVasher, gave his decisions with promptitude awl satisfaction to all concerned. The only judicial inquiry held during the day concerned an alleged interference dining the Douglas Handicap by Papapongn. ridden by N. F. Johnson, with Pounia with M. Gray up, and as a result Johnson was suspended for the rest of the day. An occurrence which wi'l be greatly regretted among all interested on the spot took place subsequent to th e Cup Handicap, when one of the competitors, Mr El. Rotliery’s bay mare, AVhetunui, which appeared distressed during the concluding stages, collapsed when approaching the loose ixix and expired. It is believed that death was clue to internal bleeding as the result of a b’ood vessel being ruptured during the progress of the race.
