THE SUN MOVES
AT 120 MILES PER SECOND) A SCIENTIST’S CLAIM. BLOW AT EINSTEIN’S THEORY. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Dec. 30, 10.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 29. At Kansas City, Missouri, Dr Dayton Miller, president of the American Physics Society, read a paper before the convention of the American .Association for the Advancement of Science), which, in; the opinion, oif scientists, struck a blow at the foundations of Professor Einstein’s theory of relativity. Dr Miller has been working on the top of Mount Wilson, California, in an endeavour to detect the motion of the earth and the solar system through the ether of space. Professor Einstein claimed' that it was impossible to detect such, a motion and) based his relativity theory largley upon that fact, but Dr Miller said: “I succeeded in measuring the motion of the earth and solar system in the ether of space. My work annuls the second postulate of Professor Einstein ’s theory. ’ ’ Dr Miller also declared that he succeeded in measuring the direction and ’size of this motion. He claimed that the speed of the solar system was ten times as great as he had previously thought. The sun moves through space at the speed of 120 miles per second, carrying the earth and planets at a similar rate, while the direction is close to the star Vega. Dr Miller made one hundred thousand observations before declaring the result. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
