THE GRAND—TO NIGHT. “NEW LIVES FOR OLD.” Betty Compson plays a great role in her Paramount picture “New Lives for Old,” which will be seen at the Grand Theatre to night. It is the romance of a favourite French dancer who tried to hide her past from the man she loved. And when he learned the truth ..... ? Betty is seen in a remarkable dual role. Wallace MacDonald, Sheldon Lewis, and Theodore Kosloff are also in the picture. Another picture of the popular “Fight and Win” series, featuring Jack Dempsey, will also be shown this evening. The world’s champion battler is a. very good actor. A full supporting programme will be presented. “GAPPY RICKS”—TO-NIGHT. THE REAL PLAY. Direct from J. C. Williamson’s metropolitan theatres, in conjunction with Philip Lytton, Ltd., there will be presented at the Opera House to-night (Wednesday) and Thursday the dramatisation of Peter B. Kyne’s famous book “Cappy Ricks,” which has just concluded record seasons in Melbourne and Sydney. The play is described as a rollicking comedy drama which has a strong love theme running through it. “Cappy Ricks” is an entirely unconventional but highly effective little man. His peculiar methods of getting things done should raise many laughs. The quality of the acting is said to be nighly commendable, each artist being typical of the character as drawn by the author. Ward Lyons, in particular, plays the principal part as though he were taken from the front page of this famous novel. The play has three acts, all the scenes being laid in and around San Francisco. The cast includes “Cappy Ricks” (Ward Lyons), Matt. Peasley, captain of the Retriever (Herbert Stallard), John Skinner, manager of the Blue Star S.N. Co., (Walter Dyer), Florence Ricks, Cappy’s daughter (Kathryn Murie), Lucy Ricks, Cappy’s sister (Doris Bingham), Cecil Pericles Bernhard (Donald Nicol), Cappy’s secretary (Mary Macrae), his lawyer (Noel Griffiths), his chauffeur (Fred Smithton), Dick Casey and Captain Peterson, of the San Francisco waterfront (Bertram Lewis and William Emmett). The season is limited to two nights, and the box plans are now open at Mrs Cook’s, Opera- House, where" there has been a big demand for seats. Intending patrons are advised to book early, and thus avoid disappointment.
