KAKARAMEA.
(From Our Own Correspondent). The local school closed for the Christinas vacation on Friday last. During the afternoon the children gave a short concert to a faii’ly large audience of parents and friends. Mr H. G. Dickie, M.P., presented the prizes and gave the children a short address. The following pupils gained their proficiency: Gertrude Hal); Maggie Forbes, Harry Wills, D. Garwick and Laurence Herbert. Ena Tong gained competency. It speaks well for the new teacher, Mr Havre, who only took charge of the schoo] after the epidemic, that he got so many proficiency passes. The pupils presented Mr Harre and Miss Beamish with a small present each. The local croquet club is flourishing, and members seem to take a keen interest in the game, as there are some players on the courts practically every evening. Kakaiamea, with the rest of South Taranaki, con'd do with a little more rain and a lot Jess wind. There has hardly been one calm day this spring, •and consequently both grass and., root crops have not done so well as usual. Grass has riot been so scarce for years at this time. A good number of farmers have had to resow their mangolds, and in some cases have had to sow carrots as it was too late for mangolds. Early sown' soft turnips ill some cases had to he resown. As evidence of the way the wind dries up the top of the ground, I know of a. case where a six-acre paddock was sown in millet and maize and peas. Tu ■o acres of the maize and peas were sown one afternoon, and put in as deeply as the drill would sow them, and the millet (four .acres) sown the next morning and as. shallow as possible. The maize and peas were up a fortnight sooner through being down in the damp ground, and the millet did not germinate until there was a shower of rain to dampen the top of the ground. Both were rolled before sowing and after and treated the same in every way. I'lnsilage making is in full swing at present, and it is gaining in favour with farmers every year, more being made each year.
