RIFLE SHOOTING.

THE RANGE AT MAN AW ATOU. ALTERATIONS AND' UMPIIOVJiriVLENIS. OFFICIAL OPENING. The rifle range on the Defence Department's! property, near- the cliff* at the end of the Mauaivapou Road, lias been practically reconstructed during the last few weeks, and now conditions are as good as any enthusiast' could wish. At the old butts just above the elitt there was always trouble with the sand. The bullets hitting the light soil raised the sand 1 and it speed until the butts were partially covered. lit- was felt that improvements' were necessary and therefore a contract was let to Mi’. A. B. Burrell to move the butts and practically re-make them on a .site about a hundred yards further from the cliffs. There is now a solid hank of earth turfed on the side facing the shooters and timbered very solidly on the other side’, whence are operated the targets and where the markers do their work.

The ranges of shooting have been reduced bf a hundred yards, varying from two ,to five hundred, hut. these are the most effective and essential distances.

The work lias (been extremely well done and is a credit to the contractor, with whose work the Department has expressed the utmost satisfaction. The quality of the timber is shown by* the fact that what was used in the old butte, and has been there for several years, is as good as the day it was erected.

The official, opening and christening of the new range took place yesterday afternoon, when a. party comprising Major Bremner, ’Lieut. * Maoaskilll, Sergt.-jMajor Mahoney, and several others went down.

The opening shots were filed from a machine gun by Mrs Bremner and Mrs Maaaskill, good shooting being done by both ladies.

The .party then wept to the butts and after inspection of the work and the targets “took cover” while .some rifie shooting was done.

The function was quite successful and everything passed off well. Territorials and. Rifle Oliib members will no doubt appreciate the new arrangements.
