STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. At the ordinary meeting of the Stratford County Council there were present : Messrs T. R. Anderson (chairman), E. Walter, M.P., W. H. Were, C J. Belcher, J. Jacobsen, M. Davis, S. Pitt, J. O’Neill and S. Parker. ENGINEER’S REPORT.
The engineer inter alia, as follows: — , , , West Riding.—Practically the whole of the past period has been occupied in securing blinding from _ tlie lvapuni Stream. This material is being distributed on Opunake No. 1 and Manaia Roads. , North Riding (West).—Metal patching and water-tabling have been ,done on the Monmouth, Lower Pembroke, and Rutland Roads. The tarring of the sides of th e Mountain Road from the borough boundary to Midhirst is completed. The balance of the month was occupied in crushing metal and chips. South Riding.—The concrete culvert on the .Skinner Road is completed, with the exception of the wing walls and posts and rails oil the western side. These could not he nut in until the traffic was again converted from the side track. The filling over the culvert has also been put in and the traffic is being run over it. A start is being made with the ditch necessary to divert the stream. Clay binding and water-tabling have been done on the Skinner, Sole, Cornwall and Climie Roads, and where necessary tar patching has been done on the Mountain Road. One*•;hundred and twenty-one vards of sand and fine shingle have been distributed on the Wnihapa Road, twenty-four on the Robson Road, and sue hundred and thirty-six on the Bird Road from the Bird Road dump. One hundred and thirty-two yards of blinding have been carted from the Cornwall Road to the Mountain Road. The report wast adopted. HEAVY TRAFFICS FEES.
The chairman otf the Main. Highways’ Bo rad drew attention to the fact that apparently local authorities were nottaking full advantage of the provisions of the Public Works Alot, of 1924, under which there was power to collect annual license fees from the owners of heavy vehicles. The council were asked fco advise what .steps were being taken to collect the revenue in question.—Received. The matter of inquiring into matters in connection with the distribution, of fees was left, in the hands or the chairman. 1 LOAN REFUSED. The .superintendent, State- Advances' Office-, advised that on account of the demands made upon the resources of the. Department -it was not at .present possible to consider the council’s application for the £ISOO Mangaehu, Tauwharenikau Roads loan.—Received. OLIMIE, ROAD. Mr. C. H. Harrison, of Glimie Road, drew attention to- the fact that the majority of the settlers on that road objected to its being laid down in bitumen. Tlie engineer said it had been decided at a previous meeting that the cuttings ishould be tad .sealed, but that no action be taken in regard to the remaining portion of the road until tlie settlers had.been consulted. Or. Pitt : It seems to me that as a section of the settlers tell ns to do nothing we should not worry. Or. Walter thought that before anything was done the Riding members call a meeting of settlers. After .some further discussion it was decided on the motion of Or. O’Neill to receive the letter. GENERAL.
An application from Mr. H. Wiggins, of Mahoe, asking for permission to stack firewood on the roadside was refused. The chairman said it was not proposed to grant such permission to anyone. / The Medical Officer of Health forwarded a circular dealing with ice cream premises.—Received.
It was decided to draw the attention of the Taranaki Power Board to the following paragraph in the ranger's report: “The Taranaki Power Board are leaving some or the road-sides in a very untidy . state. In some cases the branches of trees are still lying .as they were cut down and blackberries! and other weeds are growing amongst them. ”
The county ranger reported hawing during the last month, impounded oil the county reads 12 head of stock, including four horses, two cows and six calves, the property of five persons. Miotor licenses were coming in well,twenty having been received since last meeting. He drew attention to the action of the Power Board in; leaving trees and branches on the side of the read in some places, harbouring noxious weeds. The matter of disposing of the toll gate cottage was left in the hands of the engineer.-
