TOURING THE WORLD

The Cunard liner Garinthia, carrying, the first party of round-the-world tourists to visit Ne.w Zealand, arrived yesterday afternoon. To-day the tourists were occupied in sight-seeing around the city, a fleet of eighty motor cars having been retained for that purpose. A party of seventy leaves by train for Rotorua this afternoon. returning to the ship before she sails for Wellington on Tuesday evening. A second party of fifty leave by the Rotorua express to-morrow morning and will rejoin the ship at Wellington. With the exception of about a dozen, all are American citizens. YACHTING. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 21. The second Sanders Cup trial, held at Lyttelton, was won. by the Linnet. Though the Betty was first past the post, the judge held that this yacht had fouled a buoy. MOTOR-CARS COLLIDE. WAIROA, Dec. 21. James Mowbray Bruce, of Napier, a. cycle agent, was seriously injured this morning as a result of his car colliding with a motor company’s service, car. The accident happened halfway between Wailiare and Mohaka. Details of the affair are not available. SHUNTER DIES FROM INJURIES. PALMERSTON N., Dec. 21. The death occurred at the hospital yesterday, as a result of injuries received in the local railway yards, of Douglas Norman Pye, a shunter aged 32 years. He was married and leaves a widow and three young children. At the time of the accident the deceased was noting the numbers on the trucks on a train, and he stepped back in front of a rake of waggons which were being shunted on an adjacent line. UNPLEASANT ELECTION REMINDER. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 21. The staff of the railway goods shed received on Friday a reminder of the recent election that caused bitter resentment. It appears that on the polling day the goods sheds were closed at noon, and all the staff who could be’ dispensed with were given a halfday off; but whereas the members of the permanent staff do not lose any wages, the casual members lose an amount equivalent to four hours’ pay. A MAORI IN TROUBLE. NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 21. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day a Maori named Wae Inia pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking and entering the Pungarehu Post- Office on Sunday morning with intent, to commit < crime. He was remanded to tne oupieine Court for sentence. AUCKLAND WOMAN’S GENEROUS GIFTS. AUCKLAND, Dec. 21. Bequests under the will of the late Miss Isa Outhwaite, who w.as born in Auckland 83 years ago, include £looo for the Mater Misereacorcha Hospital, £SOO for the benefit of dischargee teuu e prisoners, £3OO to the Jubilee Institute for the B’ind, £SOO for the pool of the city of Besancon, France, her mother’s native city. Gifts of property include Hen Island, off the entrance of Whangarei Harbour, to the King, with a trust that it be used as a bird sanctuary; the testatrix’s home, with over an acre, in Newmarket, to the Borough as a public park; a property of several acres adjacent to the Auckland Bovs’ Grammar School, for a Roman Catholic College site. Th e residue of the estate, after gifts to various Catho’ic organisations, goes to the Roman Catholic Bishop for the purposes of education. DR AWING OF ART UNION POSTPONED. DUNEDIN, Deo. 21. The drawing of the colossal art union, in which thousands of people from all parts of the Dominion are participating, has been postponed till Wednesday night. There was an exceptionally heavy mail on Saturday night, and it was found impossible to check and audit the returns in time.
