ALARMING LAND CREEP.

CRACKS IN A STREET. DANCER TO DWELLINGS. There was an alarming earth “creep” at Merewether, Newcastle, New South Wales, on .December 5. There was no apparent noise, and the first that most people knew about it was a crack right, across the street about an inch rvide. In some cases this crack was even wider. The doors in several houses 1 would not open, and there were cracks on the ground underneath. In one house the brick work 'of the fireplace dropped about half an inch and the Avail Avas damaged. Water, service pipes Avere broken, and cement rvork in the backyards of houses Avas badly cracked. Although people living in the. locality have been aware on previous occasions of slight earth tremors, nothing of so marked a nature has occurred for several years. The creep is believed to be caused by the collapse of supporting pillars in old and abandoned colliery Avorkings Avith Avhicli the neighbourhood is honeycombed.
