A FATAL ACCIDENT.
AIM\ CRUSHED BY MOTOR! LORRY DRIVER, COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) HAMILTON, Dec. 20. The dmimstances surrounding the death of Ernest Thomas White, who was brushed to death through a wheel of a heavy motor lorry passing over him on the main Te A,wainutu-Hamilton road last Saturday evening, a man named, Cook having both legs broken at. the isanie time, was inquired, into ■by the coroner, Mr. Wyveru Wilson, S.M. A charge against the driver of the lorry, Leonard Da,vis, “that being in a state of intoxication while in Charge of a motor vehicle, he did, by an act in relation thereto, cause the .death of White,” was taken in conjunction by justices. A heavy lorry owned by limes and Co., brewers, Hamilton, was returning from the T© Awamutu racecourse laden with empty beer barrels, and when nearing Ohaupo the lorry met with a mishap. Whether it struck a rut or skidded on the side of the road is not clear. Several men. who were riding on the barrels were thrown to the ground, the rear wheel passing over White, who was frightfully mangled and killed instantly,‘and Cook, who had both legs broken. Another passenger only rolled away in time, a wheel passing over his coat and flattening a tin of tobacco in a. pocket. The evidence at the inquest,, showed that drinking had been going on among some inember.s' of the parity while on their return to Hamilton. The coroner found that White met his death from ,shock caused through being run over by the lorry driven by Davis, and .further, that death was duo to the recklessness and negligence of Davis, who was! in state of intoxication at the time. D'avtiis was committed for trial on a charge of causing White’s death.
