SWIMMING CARNIVAL.
INTF. RESTING EVENTS. There was a large attendance at the. baths last evening when the first carinvai of the present season was held under the auspices of the Hawera Amateur Swimming Club. \\anganui swimmers, although they arrived late owing to a mishap on the road, gave added interest to the contests, and close and exciting finishes were the oidei. Dowsett the New Zealand champion' swimmer' from Wanganui, won the men’s 50 vards race after giving away a fair start When it seemed that he would not lie in a place he got up oyer the 'ast few yards to touch down ahead ot Chainev, 'another Wanganui swimmer. Twomey (Wanganui) won the men s 75 yards handicap from Dowsett by a narrow margin. Arrangements were capably carried out by the club’s officials with the assistance of tlie caretaker, Mr Dowdle. Details of the events were as follow: •25 Yards Handicap (boys under 14). —Hammond (lsec) 1, A. Dowdle (scr.) 2. Time, 22 2-osecs.
