PROFITABLE CONCERN. LAST YEAR’S OPERATIONS PA V 4.88 PER CENT. ON CAPITAL. BY CABLE— PBESS AKHOCIATION--COPYBIGHT Received Dee. 17, 11.30 a.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 17. The Chief Railway Commissioner, speaking at the Millions Club, said that at the end of the last financial year the capital invested in railways •and tramways in New South Wales amounted to one hundred and eleven millions, and in that period the services earned £20,388,000. The department had spent £15,115,000, leaving £5,274,000 to pay 4.88 per cent, on the capital. This return on the capital had not been equalled by any railway in the world operated by white labour.
