HAWERA BOARD MEETS. The Hawera Technical High School Board met last evening, when there were present: Messrs R(chair), J. AV. Harding, J B Murdoch. Crompton, Entwistle, A. Campbell T. C. Hobbs, T. AY. J. Howell and A. Lees. An apology for absence was received from Mrs Gilbert. The headmaster, Mr A. Gray, reported as follows: — ••J have to report that the numbers are practically the same as hist month. The school breaking-up ceremony has been arranged for the AVinter Show Buildings at 7.30 p.m._ on Thursday evening. It is sincerely hoped that all members of the board and parents will be present. The School Sports -Committee, is grateful for a donation of ten shillings each from Mrs H. V. Gower, of Eltliam, and Mr Hav-Mackenzie. Mr C H Sargent has given two medals for the two winners of the primary school championships at tlie school sports, held last month. “The time lias come when a definite request shou'd be made to tlie Education Department to complete the Home Science wing. Present conditions are intolerable. AA'e are allowed the us e of a room merely on sufferance, and have no control. •‘The last few weeks have been interesting. on account of tlie examinations. The various examining bodies have not made much al’mvanoe for the short year. Indeed in some cases, notably Latin for P.S.E., the paper appeared to be harder than ever. In my opinion, at least three years’ tuition would be necessary to enable a pupil satisfactorily to cope with a paper of this severity. “Two more students, AGolet Hergenhan and Mabel Brough, have been sucoessfu 1 in .passing the Public Service Commissioner’s examination in shorthand and typing. This is a really good performance, and means a great deal to the successful candidates.” The report was adopted. Mr H. G. Dickie, M.P., wrote, enclosing a cheque for £2 2s. which he stipulated was for expenditure on m-dals for the boy and girl who attained the positions of dux. Votes of thanks were accorded Mr Dickie and the donors mentioned in the headmaster’s report. It was decided to make a strong app’ication to the Department for the building of additional rooms at the school to accommodate home science classes. The severity of the recent examinations, especially when the disadvantage caused, by the recent epidemic were taken into consideration, was mentioned by the headmaster, who said that if such tests were going to be continued the scholars would have to commence their secondary education earlier, lliis emphasised the necessity for junior high schools. It- was decided to get -expert advice concerning a proposal to extend the heating system in the main building to the ■detached class-rooms. BREAKING-UP ceremony. AT AVINTER SHOW BUILDINGS TO-MORROW. An interesting function, will be held at the Winter Show Buildings to-mor-row (Thursday) evening, when the annual presentation of certificates and tiophies in connection with the Hawera High School will take place. There will be a short programme of music and a senes of drill displays by the pupils.
