KILLINGS IN CHICAGO.
INCREASE OF CRIME. HOME-MADE WINE. CHICAGO, Dec. 2. Chicago’s wave of lawlessness is increasing in violence. Gangs of warring bootleggers light in the streets, and one of the boldest of them lias had eight men assassinated within the last fortnight. Clergymen are pointing out that the gaols are full and the churches empty. Chicago, they say, has forgotten God. Prohibition officials have learned that 300,000 Americans are making grape wine on permits issued before prohibition. They are seeking measures to revoke permits which authorise each holder to manufacture 200 gallons a year. The Moderation League of New York has made a survey of the nation and issued a- report. Drunkenness among men and women. and even children, it says, is appalling. Repeal of the prohibition law is urged/ ~ /
