Twigg, who was fatally wounded in an encounter with a iion in Northern Rhodesia in October, have been received. Mr. Twigg, accompanied by Mrs. Twigg and Air. Jack Holmes, ot Frankto-n, arrived at Livingstone, Northern Rhodesia, some time before the fatal occurrence. Airs. Twigg remained there, while her husband and his friend went off to the north-east on a shooting expedition. News was received subsequently that Air. Twigg had been killed in the vicinity or Lake Bangweolo. Captain Wardroper, of the Northern Rhodesia police, who had been in the north-east with the Governor of Northern Rhodesia, Sir Herbert Stanley, at the time of the tragic occurrence, gave an account of the affair to the Livingstone Aiail. About October 30 news was heard of lions, and Air. Twigg went after them with some natives. He came upon three and wounded two. Failing to come up with them again that day, he returned to the camp and started off again next morning. He- found a spoor and traces of blood, and finally one of the wounded lions at a distance of about 1.5 yards. Air. Twigg fired, but either missed or did little damage. The lion sprang at Air. Twigg. He dropped his rifle and tried to climb a tree. r l he lion caught him by the thigh and severely mauled him, finally pulling him down and throwing him over an ant heap. A little later Air. Twigg waved his arm as a signal to the natives that he was alive. Unfortunately the li<m saw this and attacked him again. Then a native took Air. Twigg s rifle and killed the lion. - Runners were despatched to Alpika, and meanwhile Mr. Twigg was conveyed there. The Governor arrived shortly afterwards, and, appreciating the gravity of the case, had his car fitted up as an ambulance to take the patient into Kasama, but that morning Air. Twigg succumbed to blood poisoning. , . . .. The funeral was attended by the Governor, who read the burial service, and by Lady Stanley.
