LIMITED EXPRESS DELAYED. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) JjEVIN, Dec. 15. The north-bound limited express was delayed for four hours at Levin fast night, from 9 o’clock to 1 o’clock, owing to a wheel breaking on the guard’s van, resulting in a pair of wheels leaving the track being dragged over two crossings. The sleepers were cut, but no serious damage was done to the permanent way. MAORI -MEETING-HOUSE BURNT PALMERSTON N., Dec. 15. “Kiriwhenua,” the Maori meetinghouse which for 50 years past has been a familiar landmark at Awapuni, was destroyed by fire early this morning. The building was in an excellent state of preservation despite its age. It was unoccupied at the time of the fire, its last occupant bqing Ereu Te Awe Awe, the aged chieftainess who. died recently. The building was to have been used by the natives at Christmas. It was insured for £3OO. Incendiarism is suspected. LINESMAN’S MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. MARTON, Dec. 15. Norman Thompson, employed by the Wanganui-Rangitikei Electric Power Board, had a remarkable escape from death at Turakina yesterday, when working aloft near a high tension wire. He had made a contact and the shock caused him to topple, but his foot caught a stay wire and Thompson was suspended in mid-air, head downwards. Brooke, the foreman, saw Thompson just in time- to- scale the ladder and rescue him. Thompson was badly burn, ed on the scalp and fingers, and is also suffering from severe shock. He was admitted to hospital for treatment.
