A PEACEABLE NATION

CONQUESTS RENOUNCED. SOVIET AND DISARMAMENT ' * 1 iS ”' OFFER TO THE POWERS. 1Y CABLE- PRESS ASSOCIATION— COPYRIGHT (Received Dec. 14, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 13. Ai. Tchitcherin, interviewed by the Observer, declared that the Soviet had repeatedly but fruitlessly approached the British Foreign Office with a view to Anglo-Russian negotiations. Britain had now dropped the question of debts, making the Soviet’s attitude on the League of Nations the acid test of its worthiness of recognition. Personally he failed to see how an entry into the League could promote a settlement of Russia’s differences with the Powers who refused to recognise her. Russia renounced all ideas of conquest, and he maintained that her army and navy were merely for the purposes of defence. She was prepared to abolish both and scrap her war industries if the other nations completely disarmed. She was also prepared for'partial dis--armament. —Sydney Sun Cable.
