Residents in the city fell into a state of panic, but they were afterwards reassured by th© presence of French, Japanese and Italian troops, who came into the city at the special request of the city police. They ai’e now guarding the electric supply, the water works, bridges and other important points. There are not many Chinese troops actually in Tientsin. Many have been sent to Machang or Peitsang, hut it is feared th© defeated forces will stream towards the city, looting as they go. Li - Ching - Lin defeated Kuo-Min-Chun’s advanced column near Machang, fighting proceeding all day. The railways around Tientsin were all cut, and the Pekin-Tientsin motor road was destroyed in several places.
