The Queen has sent a message to the National Union of Trade, representing retailers throughout the country, commending the British shopping week ol home and Empire goods as a means of reducing unemployment. She trusts every local authority and housewife will cooperate. The Daily Telegraph says that Unionist members of the House of Commons are establishing a sub-com-mittee on Imperial affairs to examine the question of overseas settlement and to explore the causes which are retarding the operation of the Empire Settlement Act. Sir Evelyn Cecil is chairman. Mr. Hunter Charles Rogers, ol Middlegreen Slough, w'ho claims that he dug up Warwickshire Shakespearean relics of incalculable value if genuine, told the Daily l Chronicle that he had received £32,000 for one hundred and forty pages of Shakespearean manuscript which he sent to America, and that the money' was invested there. He added: ‘ ‘lf there is much more mud flung at me here I shall destroy the rest of my relics.” He claims to possess Shakespeare’s marriage certifiCat€‘ ROME, Dec. 12. Heavy floods caused a subsidence of the Southern India branch railway, and a train overran the breach and four coaches capsized. _ Eight were killed and twenty-one injured. BERLIN, Dec. 12. M Rakovskv said Locarno ought to be followed by an agreement with Russia, but the latter’s attitude towards the League of Nations would not change until the nations which had not yet entered into diplomatic relations with the Soviet had done so. SYDNEY, Dec. 13. Reports from Melbourne state that there is ' much speculation and many rumours regarding the Government s intention over the deportation case. The Federal Premier is reported to have stated that he thought it was probable that there might be an appeal to the people by a referendum for an amendment of the constitution. Other reports are that Mr. Bruce has so fai taken no action nor commented on the courts’ decision in the case, beyond expressing surprise. He .is awaiting the reasons for the court’s decision, and any development will depend upon this. _ PARIS, Dec. 11. It is foreshadowed here that the spring fashions will comprise Cossack I K>ots, a swaying skirt supported by a wire arrangement, a sort of modified crinoline, and a tight-fitting hat upon a shaven head. LONDON, Dec. 11. The story of a well-to-do man’s despairing love for a married woman, who resented his attentions, lay behind the death of Cyril Reardon, who was found shot in the head outside a West End flat. The woman had intended to sail for Egypt and spent the night prior to her departure at the flat, which is the home of a woman friend. Reardon was greatly upset, and had entreated her to remain in England. It is alleged that he went to her hotel on Wednesday and threatened to kill her if she insisted on going. He went to the flat on Thursday and demanded admittance, and on this being refused he shot himself. _ Considerable money was found in his possession. Reardon was a prosperous and popular business mam It is understood that he was married, hut was livino- apart from his -wife. LONDON, Dec. 11. The Dail Eireann carried the Irish Agreement Bill by 71 votes to 20. GENEVA, Dec. 12. Lieut. -Colonel Amery denies the interview in which he is credited with war talk.
