WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHL Y MEETING

The monthly meeting of the W a,imate West County Council was held at uVtanaia yesiterday. There were present Councillors E. Long (chairman). A. Garaldn, F. Mourie, J. Leslie,S. J. Mackay, and Sir W. H, Le Fleming.. . As the meeting was: the last for this year, the opportunity was taken by the chairman to thank his fellow councillors for loyal co-operation and. assistance which they had so roachlj rriven him. He also expressed his thanks to the engineer, to the clerk and his .staff and to the press, and concluded by wishing all the compliments of the season. THE MONTH’S WORK. The foreman reported that 135 chains of the Main South Road, near the Oeo Road, had been retarred, and also 90 chains on the lower end of the Oeo Road. ■ ,11 The Oeo Road contract had been finished by Mr. Boyce., who had delivered 62 yards of crushed metal. 1-nis metal had been used to reface 75 chains of the road, and this was at present being rolled and tar grouted. The approaches to the Iva p u n i brido-e, Main South Road, had been fenced and all the old bridge timbei had been 'sold at a highly isatisfactory ipriee. With the '.exception of the gfcvbes iy to tlio old road all i-lio around the bridge was finished, The old shed which had been used to store cement in had been re-erected in the council’s yard and would he used for a smith’s shop. Good progress was being made witli the Rama Road drain by Mr. Lippiug--61 MASSEY MEMORIAL FUND. The clerk reported that £lO llis 6d had been subscribed towards the Mas-

sey Memorial Fund. It was decided to close the list and forward the money to the Dominion Treasurer of the fund. The following is a. list o.f the names of those who subscribed to the fund : —- One pound each : B. Long, I. Stoddart, A.. G. Bennett, J. Meuli, J. F. Stevenson and J. J. Patterson; ten shillings each : R. Dunn, J. E. Young, J. Campbell, J. M. Clague, W. Cunningham, John Aitken, C. Hunger, and R. S. F. Craig; five shillings : J. W. Snowdon; half-a-erown : Rev. A. C. Swanson; two .shillings: A. H. A. McEwan; one shilling each: H. R. Jones and G. St rot z. ‘ DOG TAX AND COLLARS. The dog tax was fixed at the same rate as the precious yeai-, namely, 2s 6d for cattle and sheep dogs and 10s for other classes. Two tenders for the supply of dog collars were received. After some discussion it was decided to purchase 100 collars from Mr. J. A. G. Cosgrove at eight shillings a dozen, and that all the restamping of old collars should lie. done by him at two shillings a dozen. The council decided also to purchase 100 collars from the Kaupokonui - Dairy Company, Ltd., at seven shillings 'and threepence a dozen. KATJPOKONUI BRIDGE. A letter was received from the Lands Department stating that if the old Kaupokonui bridge on the Skeet Road were demolished the piece of lapel would become Crown land. The chairman remarked that it would be necessarv to fence off the road it the old bridge were removed, in order to avoid any danger. . The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, Cr. Leslie, and the engineer HEAVY TRAFFIC 1 FEES. A circular was received from the Main Highways Board, asking what

action had been taken towards collect.-' ing heavy traffic fees. As some of the councils had neglected to collect the fees all were being asked to state their positions. The clerk stated that £355 had been collected in the county. He remarked that the Dominion revenue on heavy traffic had increased from £40.000 to £250,000 since the new regulations had come into operation. GENERAL. The tender of Mr. V\ . McCormack for sewerage work at the council chambers was accepted. The matter was left to the engineer to complete. The Dunedin and South Seas Exhibition Committee wrote again appealing .for the council’s quota towards the provincial court at the exhibition. As the council had already refused tlie application, no action was taken and the letter was received. A letter from Messrs W. Hooper and C Muggeridge was received, asking what conditions the council would require if their property was subdivided and a right-of-way made. The Native Trustee also wrote detailing several conditions.—The engineer was instructed ho supply the particulars. The question of boundary signboards was left to the engineer, in order that lie miglit confer with the . adjoining local, authorities. The work on the Dingle Road was .left to the engineer, with power to act The engineer stated he had secured some metal for the load.
