SUMMER BLOOMS.
DISPLAY AT ELTHAM. METHODIST FLOWER SHOW. A beautiful array of summer b100m.., which were the subject of enthusiastic praise from throngs of admiring visitors, was presented yesterday afternoon and evening in the Eltham Town Hall on the occasion of the Eltham Methodist annual summer flower show and fair. The exhibits included many exquisite specimens, which elicited favourable comment from tne judges, in whose opinion the combined display reflected, great credit upon the competitions and the show committee. During the evening session additional interest was sustained by the presence of the Prime Minister (the Hon. J. G. Coates), who presented the major trophies secured at the show. The preparatory and administrative arrangements entailed a great deal of painstaking effort on the part of the secretary (Mr. F. R. Pepperell), the president (Rev. W. W. Avery) and the other officials, who are to be commended on the results achieved in what has once again proved to be one of the leading, if not actually the premier, show of its kind in the province. The sub-committees were as follows: —Cut flowers and decorative: Messrs. A. Chrystal, G. H. P. Fitzgerald, R. Lewis, A. Tiplady and Mrs. Fever. Home industries: Mesdames Avery, Gardiner, Pennington and W. C. Clement. The show was officially opened in the afternoon by Sir Walter Carncross, who was formally introduced by the president, the Rev. W. Avery. Before calling upon Sir Walter, the president thanked all who had helped to make the show such a success, and complimented the exhibitors on the excellent standard maintained. Referring to the trophies, he stated that the snow was particularly fortunate in this matter and had as many, if not more, silver trophies than any other similar show in the Dominion. Sir Walter Carncross, in declaring the show open, congratulated those connected witn tne organisation and the exhibitors on the record number of entries and the fine quality maintained. Referring to the cultivation of flowers, he called attention to the refining influence such a recreation might be expected to have on the character of those so engaged, through the close association thus entailed with Nature. He also referred to the pleasure it afforded its devotees and the opportunity offered for the exchange of social amenities. In conclusion, the speaker stressed the material benefits gained through garden cultivation by the consequent increased financial value it would give to residential properties. Valuable assistance was given to the show by the work of the stall-holders. They were as follow: Produce, Alesdames Gardner, Pennington and L. Pennington; Christmas tree, Mesdames Holland, Chalmers, Lambert; afternoon tea, Mesdames Edwards, Strcater, Urry, .Judd, Ward, Sutton, Bootten, Miss Collins and helpers; work stall, Mesdames W.
