TENNIS
NOTES AND COMMENTS
The coming tournament organised oy the Hawera Tennis Club is the mam subject of interest among local players, and in order to popularise it cir? culars have been sent out to all clubs in the North Island.
This is a great opportunity for many players in South Taranaki unable to attend outside tournaments to secure good, experience in * tournament play. The Hawera courts in those days wul be the centre or much good play, and this will make the holidays very interesting to tennis players locally. The events will include championships and handicaps A and B grade, singles and doubles, and boys’ and girls’ events, so that the club is catering for ail classes of players. Good trophies are offered in each section. It will be ox interest to competitors to know that entries will close on Wednesday, December 23, with the hon. secretary, Mr. M. E. .Jones, Hawera.
The Hawera Club will have nine courts in use, and already constant attention is being given to them, so that , by the time of the tournament they will be in perfect order. The committee is also arranging for a big marquee on the ground for the accommodation ana convenience of players generally, and hope to instal a telephone there, which will be of material service to all interested.
It is understood the ladies of the Hawera Croquet Club will undertake the providing of refreshments, and if this is so the utmost satisfaction is assured.
The management of the club is taking in hand the entertainment of ■visiting players and will arrange a flannel dance on Monday, December 23, and on the same evening a progressive bridge tournambnt will be arranged by the Croquet. Club members. On the Sunday an excursion will be arranged to Dawson Falls at Mt. Egmont.
This will he the first occasion on which Hawera has run a championship tournament. The last really big event held here was the Taranaki championships, when Ollivier and the late Lance Jennings delighted the spectators with their fine play.
This tournament owes its origin largely to the energy and enthusiasm of the president, Mr. J. M. Collins, with whom will be associated a strong committee and a keen hon. secretary in Mr. M. R. Jones. It will be of the' utmost value to Hawera and' district from a tennis point of view and should act as a strong fillip to the game generally by inducing members-who intend to enter to practise hard and to get into the best form posgible.
