FOUND DROWNED. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) PALMERSTON N., Dec. 4. The body of a man named- Frank Scambiary was found in the Manawatu River. The deceased was a bottle gather, aged 43. The indications point to suicide, as a bag of stones was tied by a .strap to the neck of deceased.
THIRD PARTY INSURANCE. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 4. The Magistrate, Air. Young, in fining a motor cyclist £lO for negligence, said that all motorists should have a third party insurance for their own, as well as the public good. BIG CIVIC POSITIONS.
WELLINGTON, Dec. 4
The City Council has decided to invite applications in New Zealand and outside for the position of town clerk at a salary of £1450 per ' annum. A number of councillors were in favour of appointing Air Tait, assistant town clerk, to the position, but were outvoted. Mr Paterson, city engineer, will also shortly be resigning to take up another post.
ALLEGED MURDER. GISBORNE, Dec. 4. A young Ala or i woman named Pourewa Alaru was before the Supreme Court this morning, charged with the murder of her infant illegitimate child. She entered a plea of guilty, which Mr Justice Reed refused to accept, and ordered that a plea of not guilty be recorded. The trial is proceeding. After a discussion with counsel in chambers, his Honor informed the jury that the doctor would not swear that the child had actually lived after birth was complete. He had talked the matter over with counsel, and would ask the jury to bring in a verdict of not guilty. / This verdict was formally returned, and the charge against the accused of concealment of birth was proceeded with.
The accused pleaded guilty ito concealment of birth and was sentenced to two vears’ reformative treatment.
WOAIEN’S CLUBS. DUNEDIN, Dec. 4. The second conference of delegates representing the New Zealand women’s clubs opened this morning. It was attended bv delegates from all parts of the Dominion. It discussed matters connected with affiliation and a proposal to form a federation of women’s clubs. AIETHOD OF RAISING FUNDS. DUNEDIN, Dec. 4. > At the Plunket Society Conference, it was resolved that, while viewing with favour the suggestion of the Nelson branch that gambling methods to raise funds for the society should he discouraged, the conference felt that it was a matter which should he left to the discretion of individual branches. ELECTION CAMPAIGN INCIDENT.
WELLINGTON, Dee. 4. At the Alagistrate’s Court to-day,.Air Hewitt, S.M., dismissed a case against Herbert Swindell, who . was charged with disturbing a political meeting during the recent campaign. Defendant pleaded not guilty. After hearing .the evidence of the chairman of the meeting, who said that the defendant was removed by the police, the magistrate said that all knew that political meetings were hardly church services. Peoole often went to see the fun. He himself used to go. Some of Air Potter’s meetings in the north were quite entertaining. The defendant was nut out of the meeting, and that seemed to be all there was to it. He would not nenalise a man if he were found guilty. It was not worth while going on with the case.
