PROTECTION DUTIES.

In the House of Commons there was a. vigorous debate on a motion to apply the Safeguarding of Industries Act to cutlery, gloves, gas mantles, and wrapping paper. Air. P. Snowden (Labour) demanded the presence of the Prime Minister (Mr. Stanley Baldwin), contending that the duties were a violation of his pledge not to introduce protection by the back door. After the President of the Board of Trade (Sir P. had defended the duties the debate became heated, and the closure was carried by 257 votes to 134, but the Opposition continued discussion on other amendments, which were defeated by substantial majorities. A Labourite, Mr. Neil McLean, drew the Speaker's attention to the presence of strangers, and under the Parliamentary rules all strangers, including the press, were directed to retire aiid the' debate was continued in secret. _________
