SUMMER BLOOMS.

OKAIAWA PRESBYTERIAN SHOW

an attractive display

Thronged with admiring visitors who were unanimous in their praise of the beautiful and varied array of summer blooms, the Okaiawa Town Hall presented an animated and attractn o scene yesterday afternoon and evening on the occasion of the annual flower show arranged under the auspices of the Okaiawa Presbyterian Church, and the joint secretaries (Miss G. J. Ceos and Mr T. limes), together with ho other workers who comhined in the organisation and administration pi Uio function, are to be congratulated on the success of their efforts. Though, as was only to he expected in view of the inclement weather conditions ruling during the early part ot the season, there was a slight decrease in the volume of entries as compaied with the previous year, the quality ot the exhibits was equal to the highest standard in the history of the show. All classes in the floral and decorative sections were well represented, and keen competition ruled. The iudg© of the floral sections (Mr A. S. Rogers, of Hawera) expressed himself in conversation with a mar representative as very highly pleased with the general display. Mr Rogers intimated that, while the outstanding feature was provided by the rose classes, in which many perfectly balanced blooms showing approved texture and substance were exhibited, the standard throughout all sections was of a high merit. In almost every instance he had been compelled to exercise very exacting discrimination in giving his awards, and he considered the quality maintained reflected great credit upon the growers, particularly in view of the unfavourable weather conditions which have been experienced this season. In the decorative section the .nidge (Mrs A. S. Rogers! was also unstinted in her praise of the work exhibited. She considered that the exhibits gave evidence of careful preparation and excellent taste on the part of the various entrants, and was particularly pleased with the high standard reached in the school children.’s classes, i The points prize of a- silver teapot 'presented bv Messrs Blair and Sellar for award to tbe family scoring the I most points over all classes was annexed "by Mrs T. H. Fever, of Eltham, I who scored heavily in the sweet neas 'and cut blooms sections, Mrs T. Allan and family, of Okaiawa, being tbe run-ners-up for the trophy. _ Another notable exhibitor was Miss R. Mills (Tokaora), who by a margin 'of two points defeated Mrs AV. D. Foreman (Lepperton) in the initial contest for Messrs Bennett and Sutton’s silver cup, awarded as the points prize in the rose section. Miss Mills’ exhibits' included beautiful specimens of “Duchess of Wellington,” '“Avoca,” “Madame Edouard Heriot,” “Mrs Franklin Denniston,” “Margaret Dickson Hamil, ! “Queen Alexandra,” and ‘Hon. Ina Bingham.” Under the terms of the award the cup is far annual com- . petition, and may be won outright it secured twice by an exhibitor. It was presented this year to replace the donors’ similar trophy which became the property of Miss Mills at the previous show. . . , The single bloom championship of the rose classes, carrying the special prize donated bv Mr E. J. Meuli, was. won by Mrs E. J. Betts., of Okaiawa. with a perfectly proportioned Chateau d e Cl os Vougeot,” a richly-toned scarlet, black shaded b’oom of velvety texture, known as the darkest of the hybrid tea roses. ‘During the evening session a.n appreciated entei tainment was rendered by a party representing the Manaia Choral Society, under the conductorship of the Rev. J. D. Smith. I he programme included the chorus numbers, “Oh Who will O’er the Downs P’ , “All Among the Bariey,” “Old Mother Hubbard,’’ and “The Carnival.” The •Rev Smith contributed the solos ‘ A Tinker’s Song,” and “The Admiral’s Story”; Mr B. Badland sang “Red Devon by the Sea,” Airs N. Innes, Miss B. Bridge and Messrs Smith and Badland were heard in the humorous quartette “Prophundo Basso”; Miss Will- and Mr H. Others of th e party udiose names have nut already been mentioned were : Mesdantes S. Mead, J. Aleu'i, Miss M. Mead and Mr N. Humphreys. Activities which added to the general success of the show were a sweets stall, conducted by Mesdantes Innes and G. Good, a produce stall conducted by Mr R.
