AUCKLAND FATALITIES. (by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 2. William Richard Coughlan. was found dead hanging in his cell at Mount Eden gaol at 6.40 this morning. He was last seen alive by a warder at 11 o’clock last night. Ernest William Le Heron, aged 38, a married man, a boot repairer by occupation, went into his shop and said good morning. He then dropped dead, evidently from heart disease.
INCREASED PAY DEMANDED
NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 2. Watersiders, after working the phosphate cargo of the steamer Cutcomb, from Nauru, for about two hours this morning, came out, demanding 2s lOd per hour instead of 2s 7)d, the award rate, on account of the dirty nature of the work. The matter was referred to Wellington, but in the meantime the steamer Avill be idle, though the fertiliser Avorks are waiting for the phosphate to commence operations.. TARANAKI OILFIELD. NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 2. Taranaki Oilfields, Ltd., reports..that the Moturoa bore is down to a total depth of 2660 feet in sandy shale, and sand from 2566 to 2610 feet. There is rather more gas and a little oil. POLICEMAN IN TROUBLE. INVERCARGILL, Dec. 2. In sentencing Alfred Henry Dusting, a policeman who Avas found guilty of negligently driving a motor and causing bodily injury to Elizabeth McKenna, Judge Sim said: “If the prisoner had admitted his guilt and taken steps to compensate the girl, I might have granted probation, hut he steadily denied his guilt up to the last and told lies to his superior officer. In addition it Avas apparent that lie must have tampering AA’ith the evidence of certain witnesses. Being a police constable, he should have set a better example. There is too much reckless driving, and the accused will be sentenced to six months’ hard labour.” SUICIDE IN PRISON. AUCKLAND, Dec. 2. William R. Coughlan, Avho hanged himself in gaol, was .an habitual criminal, and Avas sentenced in Wellington for a vear for indecent assault on a female. ‘He hanged himself with a portion of a hammock rope. SUPREME COURT AT AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, Dec. 2. At the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice sentenced Frederick Walter McCarthy to tAvo years’ reformative detention for breaking and entering and theft. He had the record of a waster, said Sir Robert Stout, and on his next offence Avas likely to be declared an habitual criminal. Reginald HoAvan was sentenced to 18 months’ reformative detention for obtaining credit AA’hile bankrupt, and for false pretences. George Crompton Mansfield received 18 months’ hard labour for false pretences. John Eric Moitoav, for breaking and entering and theft, was given two years’ reformative detention. William Stafford Anderson, Avith a record in all parts of the Avorld, was ordered three years’ reformative treatment for forgery. Wiliam Anderson Sommerville Avas given three years’ reformative treatment. Stanley Milton, a trainer, Avas sentenced to three years’ probation and prohibited from taking liquor or going on racecourses. Charles Frank Dodd was given tAvo years’ reformative treatment at the Borstal Institution. All three Avere guilty of attempted breaking and entering.
