THE RACING DESCRIBED. (By Telegraph.—Special to the Star.) FEILDING, Dec. 1. The Feilding meeting concluded in dull but fine weather. The attendance was again good and speculation was brisk, the totalisator figures showing a good increase. Santiago was a better favourite than Many Colours for the Cheltenham Hurdles, with Bonny Rill and Red Head next in order. From a fair despatch, All Win d led over the initial jump from Lady Gay, Rafa and Admiral Codrington. At this jump Rafa lost four lengths and All Wind was well clear of Lady Gay, Many Colours and Rafa -passing the stand. Going up the hack straight Many Colours took the lead, but turning into- the straight Lady Gay again took charge, to win by three-quarters of a length from Santiago, which put in a great run to beat Many Colours for third. Admiral Codrington -and Gold Peak were next.

Bettors laid long odds that, Tamatete would win tlu- Oroua Stakes, -Motley, with about half his total, being the only other runner to be considered. When the tapes- rose, Tamatete and Motley began together, but at the end of the first furlong Tamatete was half a length in front of Motley, with Standard and Elthein following. Tamatete just led “Motley into the straight, but the mare immediately passed him, and going on won very easily from Tamatete, which only beat Standard. Lady Bentinek was backed down to less than even money for the Colvton Handicap, Shut-Eye,‘ with half the total, being second choice. Lady Bentinck and Rouex began best, but ShutEve soon took charge and was well clear of Lady Bontinck at the straight entrance. Over the last furlong ShutEye tired and Lady Bontinck and Rouex, running on, fought out t-hc finish, Lady Bontinck just winning, while Rouex beat. Shut-Eye by three-quarters of a length. Tuahine was fourth. Betting took a wide range for the Nikau Hack, for which event First Acre was a pronounced favourite, carrying about twice as fiiuch as the bracketed pair, Blue Peter and No Response. Subjection, Glengariff and Luccrnal were all evenly supported. When the tapes rose, Sleet began smartly, leading First Acre, Sea Star, Subjection and Glengariff. There was little alteration over the first four fu'nongs, but turning into the straight Sleet had a useful lead. Once in a line for the post First Acre took charge, to win easily from Lin Arlington. Sleet and Subjection, with the unlucky Glengariff in fifth place. Good Sport, with (Roy Reed in, the saddle, was a big favourite for the St. Andrew’s Handicap, with Imperial Spark, Kilfaire, Askari and Enthusiasm sail well supported. After the starter bad wasted too much time wii-ti the misbehaving Askari, the tapes rose to a good start. Gauntlet was the early leader from Kilfaire, Euphonium, Good Sport and Imperial Spark, with the exception that Euphonium led into the straight. There was no alteration of the leading positions in .the straight. Good Sport finished fast and won by half a length from Imperial Spark, which just beat Enthusiasm. Euphonium was fourth and Kilfaire was fifth. Several of the runners for the Novice Stakes were well supported, but at the close of the betting Royal Land was a good favourite from Adavale, Panart and Sovena. When the tapes rose Sovena. Adavale, Panart and Royal Land began well, but Eden Hall was badly left three furlongs from home. Duello got to'the front and led Adavale and Royal Land into the straight, but ’over the last furlong Adavale ran or, well to win nicely from Duello, which only just beat Sovena and Panart. Bonhomme carried just under four figures in the liongotea Welter, with Kilburn and Closefire next best supported. When the tapes rose the favourite was hopelessly left, and Asleep led from Ncvar, Aropeta, Kilburn and Opa. Going up the back stretch Novar led Kyla, Ben Nevis, Aropeta, Asleep and Mountain Top. At the straight entrance Novar was well clear and ran on to win well from Mountain Top, which only lasted long enough to hold off Ben Nevis and Kilburn.

Racing concluded with the Empire Welter, and in a good pool The Lamb was a solid' favourite from Bonogno and- Beaumont. After a lot of delay at the start, Probate was first out, but Royal Diadem soon took charge to lead Beaumont. Loyal Maid and The Lamb over tlie early stages.. There was iittie alteration till well in a fine for home, when Barrv brought The Lamb through ami he won well, while Martulla got up in I lie last few yard.: lo beat Beaumont. Bonogne go! a very bad start and also had a bad run over the last furlong.

NOTES AND COMMENTS, (By “ Maecenas. ”) The Al"c-.t}iven and Taumarunui Racing C’lill)S 1:old their annual meetings on StftturiT'ny* next. It. is stated. that the price paid for Runnyniedo was 4000 gui noas, with 1000 guineas added in the event of King- John’s son winning a certain nmoimt. .One rarely sees four full-blooded relations racing at the same meeting/yet

at- the recent Foil ding meeting Tainatote, Tu Id a, Padonna andJ Ohui, all sisters and! brothers, competed. Ohui won very easily at Feilding on Saturday, but the class was poor, and obviously this filly is many classes inferior to her brother, Tamatete or her sister Tukia. Padonna, too, appears to be a blot on the family. As Avas only to be expected, there have been prospective buyers- .pricing The Banker, but so far the gelding remains in the same ownership. It is said that as much as 5000 guineas was asked for the son of Kilbroney. If taken to Australia, The Banker might soon repay even that big sum.

After showing promising form last autumn, Sun Up was hailed by some of his southern admirers as much above the average as a handicap performer, but. evidently the present owner of the Sunny Lake gelding holds no such views, as recently Sun Up was jumped in view of hurdle races.

Suggestion was.-backed as if unbeatable for the Feilding Cup last Saturday, and his trainer subscribed to that opinion. Jumping out well, Suggestion was remarkably well placed and was going easy when he broke a blood vessel six furlongs from the winning post. Considering bis weight and the course, Glengariff was. responsible for a good performance in the Fitzroy Hack on the opening day of the Feilding meeting. This gelding should pay his way during the holidays. Sea Star began well at Feilding on Saturday, but a bad bump three, furlongs from home spoilt any chance she had. Incidentally, it may be stated that Here was a lot of rough riding (to save'a. harsher term) 'ini the Fitzroy Hack on Saturday. • Horomea was regarded in certain quarters as. a certainty for the Fitzroy Hack at Feilding, and so it proved, but it was remarkable the good run this mare received, while two or three that might have gone well were ‘ ‘buffeted ’’ badly.

Alaster Lucerne was paying a great .dividend 1 to win at Feilding on Saturday, and- at one time over the eoneluding stages, he looked like paying out, but, like others, this gelding did not get the best of runs. Benzora. got a particularly bad passage at Feilding on- Saturday, and just' before turning into the straight was knocked, back several lengths. As lie finished remarkably fast in fourth place, it certainly appeared as if the bump settled an excellent chance, despite the fact that. Horomea won well.

Crossfire ran an excellent race throughout the Iviwitea AYe-lter at Feilding, and did not get out from the rails quite soon enough, but, -allowing for the good run Crossfire had on the rails for most of the journey, it does Tot look as if she should have beaten Martulla or Glenross.

When raced at the AVanganui spring meeting, Santiago was unlucky not to have won each day, in, place of meeting with narrow defeats. At Feilding. on Saturday last, the gelding ran a similar race, and by general opinion was again unlucky not to have won. The running of Boneeto at Feilding on Saturday did not altogether satisfy the stipendiary steward, but the trainer of the gelding, produced totalisator tickets to satisfy the official that lie was at least genuinely supported. Otauru Kid, which lias had a useful career as a hurdler, broke down at Feilding wlion going really well. As Otauru Kid is well on in years, it may bo that the racecourse has seen the last of the gelding. The Australian-bred Alah Jong made his first public appearance at the recent Feilding meeting. Considering his robust condition he ran a fair race and will not be long a maiden performer. Enthusiasm looked remarkably well when sent out to contest the Feilding Cup on Saturday last. She was- well placed throughout, but never threatened danger. He can be expected; to do well at the coming holiday meetings. After seeing Nippy race at the recent Waikato meeting, it was stated in this column that the Australian-bred gelding was a promising sort. T.his was proved earlier than expected, for Nippy beat a very useful field at the Takapuna meeting last Saturday. Nippy was bought in Australia by Trainer Jamieson for Air C. G. McTndoe, and cost, only 100 guineas. Rational’s half-brother Mask ran a good race at Feilding on Saturday, and had he been a little more- lucky in the running he certainly would have won, in place- of suffering a half-head defeat. Tukia looked big and bright when produced at the Feilding meeting, and. like her stable-mate Enthusiasm, may pay expenses if raced, at the Manawatu meeting at Christmas. Alireusonta was very heavily supported for the Flying at Feilding on Saturday, but at no. stage of the race did, he produce the brilliancy he once showed. Possibly we-have-, seen the best of Absurd’s son. After seeing The Lamb race at the recent Auckland and "Waikato meet nigs, one was forced to the conclusion that the gelding was capable of running on at the finish of six furlong races. This The, Lamb certainly accomplished at Feilding on Saturday, for at the straight entrance Alireusonta, Ladv Bentinck, Solferange and Good Sport were all in front ot' The Lanio, but with a brilliant run The Lamb ;|ust won from Good Sport. Bonogn-C: and- Shut Eve, the two. Egm out-trained geldings, were expected to run well in the Flying'Handicap at Feilding on Saturday, but. their chances were- nil once the barrier rose, for •Bonogne was left eight or ten lengths and Shut Eve was quite a dozen lengths nwav wlu-n the field settled down. During the running the, geldings showed. pore enough to suggest that, with :i fniv start, they may have paid dividends, as after being left the distances stated, SlmL Eye ran sixth and I’.unngne was just behind him. Air A. B. Williams’ pair. Gauntlet and Tuahine, were raced at Feilding mi Saturday last, and went well enough to suggest their being early winners if not pitted against the best company. AVitli a stronger lad in the saddle, Kalakaua must have won the recent Feilding Cup, in place of filling second berth. This son of Demosthenes is oh the up grade, but would do better if raced in, welter races, where the services of a stronger rider could be availed of. As owner-trainer R. Hatchis desirous, of keeping Askari. it means that the Alanawatu Racing Club will have to look for a new man to operate at the starting machine. I understand Air W Price was; offered the position, but as he is officiating at the West Coast of the South Island, oil December 31, it is almost impossible to -start at AwapunL on December 29 and catch the boat at, AV ellington in less than three hours; a feat that is necessary if he is to be at both meetings.

Consequent on the good work he was doing. No Response was much fancied for his engagement at Feilding on Satnrdav. but whatever chance No Response had was extinguished when the gelding failed, to .-jump out when the barrier rose. The mishap was not due to the starter, but to the fact that Ronhomme (which was near No Response) kicked indiscriminately, and as the field of nineteen .appeared to be more than enough for the eoursej No Response was squeezed out. On the

actual running of the, race Bonhomme was the unlucky competitor, for after losing quite a dozen lengths at the start the half-brother' tel Cllient was galloping over everything else in the clos. ing stages and eventuallv finished sixth.

When Tamatete went out to contest the Feilding Stakes, last Saturday he bore an exceptionally well trained appearance, and- did a splendid preliminary, which caused many keen followers of racing to hesitate before pronouncing Lady Cavendish a eertaintv (which she looked before Tamatete ’& * condition was revealed). From number one position Tamatete began, with all his old-time brilliancy, and after going a couple of chains he was two and a halfv lengths in front of Lady Cavendish. The filly immediately began to reduce this lead, and before turning into the straight Tamatete, was only a short half length in front, but at the actual turn Tamatete gained an additional half length, which gave him a clear length’s advantage in the short run to the post. Barry sat down and 'rode- Lady Cavendish hard, while Me-' Garten was at Tamatete with his'hands . and heels. The filly slowly closed; on her older rival, but when the post was reached Tamatete was still a neck to the.good. From another position but number one Tamatete would possibly have suffered defeat, but nevertheless his performance, was a good one for a gelding of his, years. In speaking to a capable trainer who has taken horses to Australia, he stated that he was certain New Zealand racehorses are many pounds better when racing in Australia if compared with their form in His Dominion, and in the light of the wonderful list, of successes of New Zealand horses in Australia it certainly points to this being the case. While admitting that only promising horses 'are sent across the Tasman Sea, the deeds many have registered) in Australia ..make one proud of the thoroughbreds from this . small Dominion. With the fine performances of the three-year-old Runnymede fresh in one’s mind,, one . is inclined to ~ agree that, at 4000 guineas, the gelding was not a, bad proposition for the purchaser, for if he improves like many or nlost of our horses raced- in Aus-' tralia, then he may even give that good colt Manfred a«good race. Alanfred is undoubtedly a first-class three-year-old, but one cannot overlook the game‘ness of Runnymede -in defeating both Rapine and running Te Kara to inches in the Champion Plate at Trentham. Seeing that Te, Kara made a great attempt to concede The Baker 151 b in the New Zealand Cup, when possibly not quite as well as when he raced at Trentham, the, excellent performance of the three-year-old when . raced against Te Kara at Trentham can be realised. Then we have the, ease of Rapine, carrying, 9.7 and winning the lY miles of the Metropolitan in the great time, of 2.31-4. Yet in the Stead g Gold Cup on the fourth day of the Canterbury meeting, Runnymede, carrying 7.12, fairly beat Rapine (9-3), with Count Cavour (9.0) . beaten - off. While the performances of'Runnymede are not as great as those of Manfred, th© New Zealander will only have to show the same improvement Pilliewinkie and many others have made andthe price stated to have been paid to. Runnymede will soon. be returned. Eunnvmede will be trained m future by Peter Keith, who formerly had a team at Hawera.
