The Hawera Star.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1925. THE DAIRY LABORATORY.

Delivered every evening by 5 o’clock in Hawera, Manaia, Normacby, Okaiawa, Eltbam, Mangatoki, Kaponga, Alton, Hurleyville, Fatea, Waverley, Mokoia, Whakamira. Ohangai, Meremere, Fraser Road, and Ararata.

Those gentlemen who were responsible for the establishment of the dairy laboratory in Hawera must be highly gratified by the measure of success which has attended its work in the first few months. While The Star was pleased to help in. the campaign for the setting up of the laboratory, the warning was expressed in this column that factories and suppliers should not expect too much all at once, and that the exercise of patience might be necessary. From the report which Mr Veale submitted to the executive of the Factories’ Federation yesterday, it is apparent that we were unduly pessimistic. Although the laboratory has been handicapped very considerably by the delay in the arrival of apparatus, valuable results have been secured already, and the manner in which factory managers and directorates are cooperating with Hie scientist suggests widely increased benefits for the future. Naturally, with some of his essential appliances lacking, they were only the minor problems to which Mr Veale could turn his attention in the beginning; but eheesemakers and buttermakers have found minor difficulties among the most baffling, and these will have received such help from the laboratory as should ensure their hearty - support of its work all along the line. The tracing of the ‘‘nonacid” trouble to the germs of contagious mammitis is probably, the biggest achievement to date*, and certainly it is one for the like of which we should have been fully prepared to wait another year.. As Mr Parsons said at yesterday’s meeting, if they receive no more than this, some factories will be well repaid for their contribution to the expenses of the laboratory. But the fixing of this trouble so soon is- the best possible reason for believing that other advantages will follow. The Federation has been fortunate in securing the service® of a young New Zealander of Mr Veale’s capacity; and those district factories outside the Federation may now be coining to think they should be inside. For one of the best features of the laboratory organisation is that whereby the lessons learned in one factory, and the experience gained as the result of an isolated case of trouble, will be made available to all who are supporting the institution.
