“ILLEGAL PARTY”

EXTRA EDITION.

JUDGE’S SIGNIFICANT PHRASE. PROSECUTION OF COMMUNISTS. MAY BE CONTINUED. BY GABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT (Received Nov. 27, noon.) LONDON, Nov. 26. The imprisonment of virtually the whole Communist executive will conceivably not be the end of the party’s discomfiture, since justification of further proceedings may he regarded as being embodied in a significant phrase used by the judge in sentencing the defendants: “You are members of an illegal party; carrying on an illegal work.” The convictions are the leading topic in all newspapers. Many applaud the prosecutions as providing a healthy warning, but none question the legal justice of the convictions, though some opposition commentators doubt the wisdom of driving subversive activities underground.—Reuter.
