MEMORIES OF “DIGGERS.” ARMISTICE DAY SPEECH. CALCUTTA, Nov. 12. Armistice Day was celebrated through out India in the usual manner, with a-two-minutes’ silence, garrison parades, church .services and dances. At Calcutta, 'an impressive parade past the cenotaph was attended by the Viceroy, Earl Reading, the Commander-in-Chief, General Sir William Birdwood, and was watched by a large crowd. The chief feature of the day in Calcutta was a reunion dinner of nearly '.‘looo ex-service men. Lieutenant-Gen-eral Sir George Barrow, officer-in-chief commaiulijig the eastern command, was chairman.

General Birdwood paid a surprise visit to the gathering as it was about to disperse. He made a happy little speech, largely referring to his experiences when commanding the Australians and New Zealanders.
