BOWLING.
TARANAKI CENTRE. At a meeting of the executive of tiie Taranaki Bowling Centre on Tuseday, it was decided to play the New Year tournament on January 1 and 2, three games to be played on the first day and two games of 16 heads on the second day. The semi-final and final games will be of 21 heads, and will be played on the Vogeltown green. The open tournament will commence on Tuesday, January 26, and will be played under the same conditions as last year. It was further decided that pi ay ere must wear club colours and proper bowling attire. Entries will close on January 12. Details iii connection with the entertainment of the British bowlers, who arrive at New Plymouth from Waitomo on January 2, were discussed and tentatively arranged, various sub-commit-tees being appointed. The matter of obtaining designs for a centre certificate was left in the hands of the chairman, Mr. Moore and the secretary. OPENING OF TARIKI CLUB. In perfect weather the opening of the Tariki Bowling Club took place yesterday, Mr E. Walter, M.P., officiating. Afterwards a match was played, President v. Vice-President, which resulted in a narrow win for the former.
SHIELD MATCH. ELTHAM v. AVON. Home and home matches were played yesterday by teams in the Central Division of * the shield competition. Avon won both on their own and on the Eltham greens by a comfortable margin. Scores were' as below, Avon mentioned first: Clemow, Judd, J. Weston, D.. Masters (s) 19; v. Carroll, Clarke, Fountaine, Harrison (s) 19. Walker, Pickles, Betts, F. Weston (s) 46; v. Phillips, Pennington, Carman, Drayton (s) 6. Dickinson, Femnell, H. Jones, J. C. McDonald (s) 16; v. Franks, Linn, Stanners, McKay (s) 15. Totals —Avon, 81; Eltham, 40. Kettlewell, R. H. White, F. Jackson, C. Jackson (s) 32; v. Briggs, Judd, Casey, Tiplady (s) 11. B. White. Woods, North, J. STRATFORD v. INGLEWOOD. In a similar contest between Stratford and Inglewood the former had a good win. The total scores were: Stratford 131, Inglewood 100. GILMOUR CUP. IN NORTH TARANAKI. Playing vesterdny in the Gilmour Cup competition, Fitzroy beat New Plymouth bv 92 to 85. and West End were too strong for Waitara by a margin of 46 points. BANNER MATCHES.
