Dec. 26-28-29 Manawatu R.C. Dec. 26-29, Jan. 1-2—Auckland Ra,. Dec. 31. Jan. 1-4 Greymouth J.C. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By Maecenas). _ The recent northern meetings have shown the progeny of the imported lea Tray to he at least promising. During the last twelve months death and disqualifications have considera ly weakened the ranks of our riders, and to-day this Dominion has a smaller number of capable horsemen than at any time within the memory of most of the present-day sportsmen. While a large number of Taranaki horses are nominated lor the lending spring meeting, which opens next week, no horses from this province appear in in the Takapuna nominations, winch race meeting takes p’ace on the same dates. „ _ Although the name of Surveyor appears amongst the nominations for the Alison Cup, to be decided .at Takapuna next week, the appearance there of Nassau’s son is very unlikely, as ho lias done no work this season. hast season Th e Lamb was a very quick beginner, but this season the gelding appears to have lost this brilliancy, but" has become more so 1 id, and now runs out a. good seven furlongs. The Lamb should pay his way handsomely this season. While it is given out by some that The Banker was very lucky to beat Rapine in the Canterbury Cup, others were just as confident that the Taranaki gelding was Rapine’s master. As The Banker is more likely to make most improvement, he may again beat Ranine if they meet.

The totalisator figures showed an increase of £7542 at the recent meeting of the Waikato Racing Club. This would suggest that the financial barometer in the Waikato is returning to normal.

In conversation with the writer, the well-known breeder of thoroughbreds, Mr G. Currie, stated that before Commendation went “under the hammer,” the son of Eulogy was expected to go a s high as 1500 guineas. Imagine the shock the owner got when nothing better than Mr J. T. Jamieson’s 200 guineas was offered.

The steep’echaser Birkenella has had many a hard race this winter, more especially when one considers he is practically* a novice at the jumping branch of racing. After racing at the Waikato meeting. Birkenella wa s railed home to the Wairarapa, where he will be treated to a well-earned spell. . This gelding should do we,ll next seasotai over courses that have reasonably stiff jumps, but over “country” such as that at Ellerslie he would have little chance.

In penning my note s on the evening of the first day of the "Waikato meeting, it was remarked that Barry showed good judgment on Muraahi in the Waikato Cup. As Mura nil i dead-lieu ted with Desert Glow over l£ miles on the second clay of the meeting, it certainly apnea rs to prove how unlucky the Tara-naki-owned ge’ding was over the longer course of the Cup contest. Muraahi was just a trifle unlucky not to have won outright on the second .day. The form of this season’s two-venr-olds has once more demonstrated the luck of the sale ring. When Mr G. Currie’s Yearlings were offered by auction in February last, Mr W. H. jGaisford was anxiou R to secure the AbsurdHol yrood colt, and was prepared to give a much higher price than lie subsequent'y sold for (750 guineas), hut owing to some cause Mr 'Gaisford missed the colt, which now races as Limited for Mr W. McDu ncan. After missing Limited, Mr Gaisford paid Mr Jamieson .a hundred guineas over the auction m-ice for Commendation. At present Commendation is classed above Limited.
