The Wellington war memorial is still the subject of contention. At a meeting of the executive it was decided to make a statement to the public that the funds were collected for a purely symbolical memorial, and that the site was unsuitable for a carillon of bells, which was strongly favoured by a section of subscribers. In consequence, four members of the executive resigned, protesting that the statement was inaccurate and highly prejudicial to the interests of the memorial.
Supporters of the carillon proposal held a meeting and decided to agitate for the erection of a tower and bells preferably, as part of the memorial.
