ENTERTAINMENTS

OPERA HOUSE, TO-NIGHT. CARLTON MAX AND “THE AIR MAIL.” A splendid show night programme will be presented at the Opera Flo use again this evening. It is rarely that Hawera is visited by such a clever ventriloquist as Carlton Max proved himself to be last night at the Opera House. With the stage set as a schoolroom, himself attired as the schoolmaster, and “Jerry” and “Nelly Kelly the pupils, he had the audience in shrieks of merriment during the whole of his act. Carlton Max may be styled the prince of the world’s ventnloquists, and with his pals, Jcriy and Nellie Kelly,” will provide a very entertaining 25 minutes’ act. The Paramount super feature, “The Air Mail,” will provide thrills galore. It features Warner Baxter, Billie Dove, Mary Brian, and Douglas Fairbanks, junr. The story tells of a crook and his regeneration. Patrons are ascured of a spiendid evening’s entertainment, and are advised to hook their seats. AUSTRALIAN SILVER; BAND. SHOWGROUNDS—TO-NIGHT. The Australian Silver Band, under the baton of Mr. Albert H. Bade (who so successfully conducted the world tour of the Australian Newcastle Steel Works Band), will give a particularly attractive programme in the Showgrounds to-night-, weather permitting. Should inclement weather prevail the concert will be given in the AVinter Show Buildings, where comfortable seating arrangements have been made. The visit of this world-famous conductor and his Newcastle Steel Works Band to Hawera some six months ago will be remembered by the people of this district. On that occasion the Opera House was filled to its full capacity, and many would-be patrons were disappointed at not being able to gain admittance to the already crowded theatre. The management has this time, therefore, taken to the Show-, grounds, where capacity is almost unlimited. and where all who desire to do .so will have an opportunity of hearing this high-class combination of Australian musicians at its best. The full programme for to-night will be found in our advertising columns.
