The opening concert of the New Zealand tour now being conducted by the Australian Silver Band (under the baton of Mr. Albert H. Baile, the brilliant conductor of the Newcastle Steel Works Band’s recent tour) given in the Grand Opera Hou.se, Wellington, on October 21, was a pronounced success. The Evening Post, in a repoi't, stated : “The Australian Silver Band last night gave abundant proof that it can so play, as at times, to suggest the work of a symphony orchestra, and it .sometimes obtained effects recalling the tones of a grand organ played upon by an artist.” The Dominion, stated : “The band lias a notably fine tone, free from any suspicion of blatancy or overblowing. The attack was crisp and firm, the degrees of modulation beautifully marked, and the ensemble playing most stimulating. The band is rich in brilliant soloists.” After a very successful season m Wellington the band lias added further successes in Hastings, Napier and Gisborne, where it is now completing a particularly popular and attractive season. Arrangements have been made for the band to give two performances in the showgrounds on Thursday night next( second night of Hawera show) and Friday night, commencing at 3 o’clock each night.
