THE INCREASING USE OF SUPERPHOSPHATE.
TESTS PROVE EFFICIENCY. BIG DEMAND FOR “WESTFIELD” SUPERPHOSPHATE being met BY NEW WORKS AT WANGANUI. The question of what manure to use is becoming less and less a problem each year. Instead of being a matter of personal fancy, accurately conducted tests both of an official and unofficial nature are yearly contributing their evidence on which to base the. selection of articficial manures. In this respect it is noteworthy that superphosphate ha s and is producing results that leave no doubt as to its effectiveness in supplementing tlie natural prosphate deficiency. in New Zealand soils. Of artificial manures superphosphate has no rival when results are compared. Basic slag and ground rock phosphate do not compare at all favourably with superphosphate on account of their insolubility in water. Superphosphate, in addition to being the only really water soluble phosphate manure, has the further advantage that it will not wash out after rain. Once it was thought that superphosphate might make the soil acicl, but this theory is now proved to be fallacious. In fact, with some soils, superphosphate counteracts acidity.
In connection with, the manufacture of superphosphate in New Zealand, it is worthy of note that the pioneers of the industry are Messrs Kempthorne Prosser and Co.’s New Zealand Drug Co., Ltd., who entered the super manufacturing field some 45 years ago. Since then they have established works at Burnside, Dunedin,; Westfield, Auckland; Hornby, Christchurch; and are now completing a large superphosphate and manure works at Wanganui. 'The Wanganui Fertiliser Works are expected to be in full operation by July next. In the meantime stocks of wellmatured “Westfield” superphosphate and other fertilisers are he’d at Wanganui to supply all immediate demands. Correspondence' and orders should be addressed to Kempthorne Prosser and Co.’s New Zealand Drug Co ; , Ltd.. 14 Wicksteed PI ace, Wanganui. l
