“INSIDE” WAR HISTORY.

PLOT THAT HURRIED AMERICA INTO FIGHT. NEW YORK, Oct. 23. The famous Zimmerman Note, in which Germany, in 1917, proposed an alliance of Germany, Japan and Mexico against America, was purchased by the British Secret Service in Mexico and deciphered in London with German codes. The “inside” story of the document is revealed in the letters of Mr Walter H. Page, who was American Ambassador to Britain, 1913-18. published in “The World’s Work.” This document was undoubtedly the last straw which forced the United States into the war. Not knowing that the British had their codes during the war, the Germans even sent by wireless a message about the Zimmerman plot. The article reveals that the German Foreign Office sent a. duplicate of the message to Count Bernstorff, German Ambassador to the United States, through the American State Department in code, thus violating the privilege of use of the cable granted by the American Government.

Dr. Alfred Zimmerman succeeded Herr von Jagow as German Foreign Secretary, holding office in 1916 and 1917. ‘
