ATHLETICS.
1 (By '‘Spike.”) FORTHCOMING FIXTURES. Hawera* Wednesday, is’dvember 18, at 8 p.in., electric light carnival. New Plymouth, Saturday, November 21, at 7.30 p.in., electric light carnival.
Wanganui, Saturday, November 28, at 1.30 p.m:, ■ day meeting. Every effort should be . made to send strong teams, to. New Plymouth and Wanganui. Late entries for Wednesday’s electric light carnival will be accepted by Mr. Leo Marter up till 9 o’clock, this evening. j . 1 understand the committee of the. Hawera Club will rigidly enforce the wearing of registered numbers on backs of singlets of all competitors in future, and also payment of .entry fees and subscriptions before , events. With regard to registered - -Lumbers, members wear the same number as issued last year if they still remain members of the Hawera Club. New members will be allotted new numbers in time for the 18th inst. There was some good running and jumping at the Technical High, School sports on Wednesday last, and tfic officials marshalled -by Mr;’- A. Gray performed tlieir duties very efficiently. These annual sports' are worth a J charge of 6d at the gates. . J D. Gower, J- Beauchamp, and V.. iWalsh, all junior members or the Hawera Amateur Club,.: competed lor -championship honours at tile Technical High School sports. Gower, who won itlie senior championship, is a very promising athlete, and showed plenty pf pace and freedom- of action in the •sprint events up . to 440 ;yards. His high jump, of 411. lllih. (a school k-ecord) was a very good performance, and in this line especially he will be fin acquisition‘to the ;■Hawera Club. •i Beauchamp should confine himself to the 100 and 220 yards events. He ife the makings of7a:,furlong runner.' > : I would like to see R. Morrissey join up with the Hawera, plub. He is very, promising over • the/huddle distances. He lowered the school record in the 880 yards event. ; D. Wills iv.oii the ,-niiie walk in good style, and also lowered the record lor this event. He rode well, in the. cycle race. He is the. makings of an athlete, and it is hoped .he will be a competitor on the 18th ; inst. Cheevers, from the scratch marks in the handicap sprint events, won his races very nicely and showed exceptional (Jcterinihaf ion in his finishing efforts. The juvenile official megaphonist announced to the public a 100 “junior .yards” handicap, and that - “the one
mile cycle race is now open”—the latter should have been “one mile open cycle race.” The committee of the Hawera Club would. find matters simplified if they re-surveyed their track to an exact 440 yards, instead of the 460 odd yards which it is at present. Where are the banks enthusiasts this year? Eric Pearce and. J. O’Grady, who were injured in a recent ear accident at . Manutalii, are members of the Patea Club and competed at Hawera oil several occasions last year. I am sure Hawera members wish them both speedy recovery. I daresay the evening events will be started after the carnival on the lßth inst. Otherwise, how are the fieldsmen getting on?
