ENTERTAINMENTS

' OPERA HOUSE, TO-NIGHT. “LA VENTURA.” La Ventura, the dainty little lady from Paris, who charmed hundreds of New Zealand audiences in the various centres when touring New Zealand with Sir Harry Lauder, opened her Hawera season last evening at the Opera House. La Ventura was' billed as giving an unique act. “Unique” is really a moderate expression for a luminous fantasy which fascinated' and.. bewildered everyone. It .is a real Parisian novelty. Quite apart from the skill of the performer, the turn is a splendid demonstration of what can be done by stage lighting and effects. The. electric manipulations are truly magical,. P ro " ducing all the hues of every rainbow ever seen. There is an endless series of tableaux effects, La Ventura appealing in scene after scene, varying snow effects of the Arctic regions to ilangorous scenes under the palms of Egypt. She is a fascinating study in her “Venus of Flowers,” in which she appears as a butterfly. In the many classical dances her artistry is greatly enhanced by the clever lighting effects, her butterfly dances being especially noteworthy. A splendid programme of pictures "will be presented this evening, headed bv Mabbl Normand in “Suzanna,” of which Mack Sennett says: “In all sincerity and without exaggeration, I say ‘Suzanna’ is the greatest achievement of my career.” THE GRAND, TG-NIGHT. ( “JACK HOXIE.” “A Roaring Adventure,” starring Jack Hoxie, will be shown in the Grand Theatre to-night (Friday). It is a .story of desperate adventure and of love that comes to a young man from the east. who risks his life to bring to justice tlie foreman of his_ father’s cattle ranch, suspected of being head of a band of cattle rustlers. The Hawera season is for two nights.
