OANTKK BU R V M EETING. NOT JOG ON THE RACING. (By Telegraph —Special to the Star.) CHRISTCHURCH.. Nov. 9. • Tliv Canterbury .Toekev Club’s meeting was contilined in ideal ■weather before a 'large attendance. The racing \j-as very good and some splendid performances were registered. The Derby, at the (‘ml, was a two-horse race between Runnymede and Star Stranger. Rapine came back with a vengeance to win the Metropolitan. For the Middleton Hurdles En Route was always a favourite, but he was sore and raced without dash. ’Frisco Mail and Sir Fanciful were next in request, but Gamecock led tin- field home. Lisogno and Axle led to the first fence, whore Ahika fell. Projector, Gamecock, Lisogae and Axle were in charge passing the mile post, but Axle made a bad jump and dropped back. Projector and Gamecock drew away, and across the top they were followed by . En Route, Bonecto, Red Head and Sir Fanciful. Gamecock was well clear at the last, fence, where he made a faulty jump, but he had enough in reserve to "win easily by four lengths. Sir Fanciful was a similar distance away third and then came ’Frisco Mail, Projector and Red Head. Fool’s Paradise, Grand . Knight and Crochet t?ere favourites for the Cri-

terion Handicap, with Reremoana and Los Ambus next in request. Reremoana showed out first from Lucius, Sun Up and Haiti. At the end. of a- furlong Sun Up had taken charge from Kaiti, Lucius, Los Ambus and Reremoana. There was not much change amongst the leaders until the false rail, where Reremoaua came up outside of Sun Up. Grand Kniglit. then showed up in the middle with Kaiti, Fool’s Paradise and Pencils also prominent. Reremoana. ridden right out, beat Grand Knight by a neck, with Peueus two lengths away third. Overdrawn was fourth and then came Fool’s Paradise, Rawene, Kaiti, Sun Up, Ora and Roux.

For the Dwell Handicap Limited was an odds on favourite, with Note and Banknote well backed. Limited and Areoilo began best and came on to the course proper well clear of Alyson. Note was beaten at the end of four furlongs and Alyson went in pursuit of Limited, wearing him down to win by a nose. Paper Chase was two lengths away third, and then came Banknote, High Gear and Kilperon.

For the Derby Oreum was the only course scratching, and Runnymede, Tiega and Crochet were backed down to odds on with Beacon Light second choice. It was a great race, run at a clipping pace, the time being easily the best for a Derby in Australia or New Zealand. .Money Order began smartly and led out of the straight from Centrepiece, Tiega and Licinius, with Mandune ami Beacon Light last. Passing the mile post Tiega was in charge from Centrepiece, Money Order, Licinius ana Star Ranger, with the same pair still last. Tiega led to the turn, where tho Hold closed up, those nearest to tho leaders being Money Order, Centrepiece, Star Stranger and Beacon Light, with Mandane showing up wide out and Runnymede handy. Runnymede came through opposite to the false rail and Star Stranger on the rails, the pair going right away from the field. Runnymede ran about in the straight, but he finished two lengths in front of Star Stranger. Ten lengths away came Mandane, half a length in front of Beacon Light, with the others followingin the order named—Centrepiece, Tiega, Money Order and Licinius.

Kilmis was a good’ favourite for the Hagley Handicap, but the betting; (took a wide range. In the first division Enare, Kilmis, Agitato, Shandre, Jolly Glad and Oreum began best, and they comprised the leading bunch all the way, Shandre gradually dropping back. Enare had taken charge at the distance, and looked a winner, but Ophir and Kilmiss came fast. Ophir at the end won by half a length from Kilmis, with Agitato a similar distance away. Enare 'was a close fourth, and Jolly Glad, Kilbirnie arid Jarretiere next. In the second division. Windshield, Cochy Bondhu, Oreum, Carnot and Goldstep began best, and Fresco slowly. The order was much the same to the turn, where Carnot came through, but was hard held. He looked a good thing, but Fresco ranged up with him, and in the end beat him home hy half a length. Retrospect finished well into third place four lengths away, and then came Goldstep, Rigel, Windshield and Sporting Girl. Carnot was a good thing beaten, but Fresco ran an excellent race considering his position in the first furlong.

For the Metropolitan Handicap, Rapine was a very decided favourite, with Royal Divorce second choice, and Ravenna and Deucalion best backed of the others. /Phoenix Park began best, but Ravenna led out; of the straight from Phoenix Park, Kilfaire, Clarinda, Royal Divorce and Haze. Going past the mile post, Waetea had taken charge from Ravenna, Haze, Phoenix Park, Royal Divorce, Happy Days, Clarinda and Tanadees. The ) order was much the same to the turn, where Rapine was showing up and Haze and Clarinda were going well. Haze shot into the lead at the distance, and Rapine challenged, with Royal Divorce and Clarinda handy and Ravenna, and Waetea falling back. Rapine took charge at the half distance, and went on to beat Haze very nicely by a length and a half. Merry Day, which finished very fast, was half a length away third, and then came Clarinda, Royal Divorce, Kilfaire, Deucalion and Waetea.

Polyphemus, the Paper Rose and Martis bracket, and the NadarSnoMinotus bracket carried the bulk of the money for the Randolph Handicap'. The field raced in line for nearly a furlong, and then First Acre and Arpent singled themselves out and led on to the course proper. Polyphemus and Minotus were prominent behind the leaders, but Arpent and First Acre had the finish to themselves, Arpent by half a length. Polyphemus finished on into third place, and then came Minotus, Megalo, and Serotina. As the field came on to the course proper Juix Floraux, a three-year-old brother to Roseday. fell and broke a leg, necessitating his destruction. In the Epsom High-weight Handicap, Sartist was a good favourite", with failsupport for Monoxide. Miss Minerva was in front before the field had gone half a furlong from Shirley, Viewpoint and Sartist. Ora’s Delight moved up in the hack straight, and across the top Miss Minerva was well clear of Shirley, Ora’s Delight, Fulmar, Viewpoint and Sartist. Miss Minerva strode away in the straight and. ridden right out. beat Viewpoint by two lengths, with Shirlev a head away, third. Quest, who made a late appearance wide out in the straight, was close up Ijpurth. and then came Monoxide and Ora’s Delight. PORTER’S SUSPENSION REDUCED. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 9. Considering this fact, lie ran quite a good race, and should certainU The Sarchedon colt Dimmer, which cost somewhere in the vicinity of 12UU guineas, was a stapler for the Welcome Stakes at the recent Auckland meeting, but ditl not run prominently. The Australian-bred filly Cocoa-nut was looked on as almost unbeatable by Trainer Jamieson for her engagement at Ellerslie last Saturday, but the best she could do was to finish a close third. More patiently handled, Cocoanut would certainly have paid a dividend. Brushwood Boy, the four-year-old brother to Erie, was a runner at Auckland last Saturday, and although the fie’d was anything hut a good one, he failed to show up, and evidently is nothing like 'as good as his sister. Helen began remarkably well m the Welcome Stakes at El’erslie on Saturday. and just before turning into the straight looked certain to run first or second. A moment later she appeared to get’ the best of her rider, and running out, lost a big advantage. Helen finished on well, under punishment, but the advantage lost could not be overtaken in the run up the straight. Oration did not begin quite as_ quickly as usual in the Shorts Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday last. However, Barry > s°on had him in second place, behind Finelli, and at the straight entrance Oration looked to have good prospects, but over the last half-furlong he tired, and eventually was beaten by both King Merv (which finished with a wonderful run) and the non-staying Finelli. , In the early stages of the Greai Northern Guineas Star Area “tailed off,’’ and was many lengths behind the leaders, with two furlongs to go. Stai Area put iii a good run over the fina stages that carried him into fourtl place, and actually finished better tha-i all his opponents, if we. except Kin 5 Lu, which made alt his own pace, ant drew out in the straight to- win like 1 most promising three-year-old. Bay Dighton was bought cheap ly last April, and looks like turnin; out a useful handicap performer. Hi: next appearance will he at the Taka puna meeting, but being a very Ion; striding gelding, Bay Dighton may b troubled by the small track.

Part-owner and Trainer 6. Cox has worked a great improvement in The Banker, which to-day stands out as one of our best handicap horses. Trainer, Cox always— contended that The Banker would develop into a performer much above the average, and Saturday’s convincing win in the New Zealand Cup certainly bears out that successful trainer’s forecast. In the past the Province of Taranaki has provided some good handicap performers over a distance of ground, and to those can be added The Banker and Te Monanui.

Those who saw the excellent performances. registered hv Te Monanui at the recent meetings of the Avondale and Wellington Clubs were quite prepared to see the son of Botoa win the Mitehelson Cup at Ellersiie last Saturday. Trainer Ernie George turned Te Monanui out in splendid condition, and, getting a beautiful run next to* the rails (thanks to Desert Glow and Boomerclay, which pair led him for II miles), To Monanui drew out over the concluding stages and won in most convincing style. Te Monanui was well ridden by Barry, hut his victory was that of a good performer. On Saturday fast.horses owned and trained in Taranaki brought fame to the province, as the successes of The Banker in the New Zealand Cup, and Te Monanui in the Mitchelson Cup, were the greatest achievements recorded by Taranaki horses on the same day. In fact, it is doubtful if two such handicaps have before been won in the same season by horses owned and trained in the same province. Taranaki has es 7 tablislied a great name in- the sporting world, but good as that record was, it was improved on-last Saturday by the great performances of those good handicap performers. The Banker and Te Monanui.
